Denise thought her teeth were too far gone to be fixed. As you can see this couldn’t have been further from the truth!

Often, the fear of that one thing we want being unobtainable is enough to prevent us from seeking it in the first place.

We tell ourselves β€œIt probably can’t be done anyway, there’s no point in asking.”

Denise came to see me one day, and told me that her grandchildren had asked her why she had a yellow tooth. I hear stories like this quite a lot because as most of us know, children can be brutally honest. They ask these questions out of curiosity, unaware of the impact it can have. In this case, Denise was brought to tears telling me how embarrassed she was by her teeth.

This was the catalyst that inched her towards a mini smile makeover that had maximum effect on her confidence and self esteem.

At the end of the day we are just dentists. It’s just a job.

But to me, it’s moments like this that make it so much more than that πŸ₯°

had a tooth which was noticeably more discoloured than the rest (the upper right incisor).

It had undergone root canal treatment years ago which can lead to discolouration and usually requires whitening from the inside of the tooth as well as the outside.

In addition to whitening this tooth also whitened his other teeth and had them cleaned in preparation for having the composite bonding replaced.

Once he reached his desired shade, he returned for his composite bonding. This was only done on two teeth (the upper left central incisor and the upper right lateral incisor).

To summarise, the following 3 steps took from hiding his smile to displaying it with pride 🀩

Most people do not stand dead in front of you when they speak to you, but will be positioned at a slight angle.

This is especially true when socialising in a group setting (incase anyone still remembers how this is done!)

This megawatt smile belongs to my good friend who was definitely self-conscious of his misshapen discoloured fillings.

His β€œbefore” picture was the widest smile I could get out of him because he had subconsciously trained himself not to show too much tooth.

Infact, I couldn’t remember the last time I saw him smile this freely, which is why I am so honoured to have been able to do this work for him.

Meet Tony a childhood friend of mine who is more like family to me.

He broke his front teeth quite severely and had these repaired at an emergency appointment with a dentist local to him.

Years later in the months leading up to his wedding he rang me for some advice about the repairs which had never looked quite right, and one of the teeth which had darkened considerably since it had first broken.

3 short years ago I started a course whilst expecting my first child. I had grand ideas of using time off during maternity leave to read around the subject matter 🀣 how naive and optimistic I was! Little did I know what motherhood would have in store for me…

In any case, I never made it to the last two sessions after going into labour a little earlier than expected.

This week I completed those two missed sessions of an 8 session course on Advanced Occlusion with

I am so grateful to and Dr Zeynep Ayhan for welcoming me back and this year’s group for accepting the gatecrasher into the fold 😊

I had been sent all the relevant reading material and handouts at the time but hearing deliver the sessions in person and having the opportunity to ask questions and consolidate my previous learning was invaluable.

His ability to demystify one of the most complex topics in dentistry is extraordinary.

Now I can’t wait to apply it to the treatment planning conundrums and head-scratching cases that seem to find their way into my surgery each and every week!

🌟COMPOSITE BONDING
Used after Anna’s teeth were aligned to improve the shape of the pointy canines and uneven edges of the front four teeth in the upper and lower arches.

πŸŒ€RETENTION
Following any type of orthodontic treatment it is important to consider appropriate retention to prevent relapse later on.

In these images we can see Anna’s bonded retainers attached to the inside surfaces of the front six teeth on both upper and lower arches.

In addition to the bonded retainers, Anna was also given removable retainers to wear at night to prevent the back teeth from moving back to their original position.
