Dear patient,
As you are well aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of normal life, with social distancing being the key to control the virus. Dentistry involves close contact, and also uses instruments that generate an aerosol, which may increase the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus. Because of these risks, the Chief Dental Officer issued a letter on 23 March, closing all dental practices and asking Health Boards to set up Urgent Dental Care Centres (UDCCs) to supply basic treatment for patients with severe dental problems.
Since then, your dentist and my team have been closely working together, as part of a joined up NHS. Your dentist has been instrumental in triaging phone calls from patients, giving advice or prescriptions as required and referring to the UDCCs when appropriate. Your dentist has also been helping to provide support and treatment in these centres too.
The Scottish Government is now considering restarting dental services as part of the gradual relaxation of “lockdown” rules. The closeness of the dentist to patient contact, however, means that the re-opening of dental practices has to be done in a particularly controlled manner. Your health and wellbeing will be at the forefront of any decisions made, with social distancing and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) being the order of the day. This will also mean that dental services are likely to take a lot longer to resume than other services on the high street.
The first step is for dentists to start seeing patients with severe toothache or infection in their own surgery. However, because of the amount of careful planning and access to resources this involves, it may take a little time for all practices to be able to open. Another factor is the added risk that aerosols pose. Therefore, patients who require emergency treatment that produces aerosols, will continue to be referred to the UDCCs. The following steps in expanding the range of treatment available in your dental practice may take some time. However, please be reassured that NHS Ayrshire & Arran will fully support your dentist in restoring NHS dental care.
