All patients receive GBT as standard as part of their hygienist appointments.

So what is GBT?

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a structured treatment approach developed by EMS. The important difference is that the hygienist doesn’t simply polish your teeth — they identify where the biofilm is and then specifically remove it.

A typical GBT appointment involves:

1. Assessment – checking the teeth and gums.
2. Disclosing – a dye highlights plaque/biofilm that may otherwise be difficult to see.
3. Airflow – the disclosed biofilm and stains are removed.
4. Perioflow – where appropriate, a finer powder can be used around periodontal pockets and implants.
5. Ultrasonic instrumentation – used where calculus (hardened tartar) remains.
6. Final check – ensuring the teeth and gums are clean.

Why is it particularly good?

The biggest advantage is that biofilm is the main driver of gum inflammation and dental disease. GBT focuses on removing that biofilm rather than simply making the teeth look polished.

It can be particularly useful for:

Healthy patients

* Excellent maintenance
* Fresh, smooth feeling
* Stain removal
* Prevention-focused hygiene

Patients with gum disease

* Helps control the bacterial biofilm responsible for inflammation
* Can be incorporated into periodontal maintenance
* Allows more targeted cleaning around difficult areas

Implant patients

* Particularly useful for maintenance around implants
* Special powders and instruments can be used appropriately around implant surfaces

Orthodontic patients

* Very useful around brackets and wires where plaque accumulates
* Helps maintain gum health during braces

Children and nervous patients

* Often more comfortable than extensive traditional scaling
* The appointment can feel less invasive
