Dear Friends and Donors,

We finally went on the mission trip to White River, Mpumalanga, South Africa, between the 17th and 24th of August 2026.

We are pleased to report that the mission was successful and we were able to attend to 14 children and 15 adults during our visit. We also gave oral health education to the 14 looked after children at Michael's Children's Village and their carers, as well as the students of Iris Bible College at Backdoor, Mpumalanga, and the staff of the Iris Mission Base there. They were all gifted with new toothbrushes and toothpaste samples.

Unfortunately, although we had shipped the Mobile Dental Unit ahead of our visit, it was not cleared by South Africa's Customs at the airport until we left the country, so we had to make do with the hand instruments that we carried in our checked luggage. This was very disappointing, as it limited the scope of treatments we could offer and the number of people we could help, overall. We had to refer some of them to local dentists for further treatment that we could have done, had we been able to use the mobile dental unit.

However, we plan to go back next year and trust that we will be able to use the equipment then, as we have decided to leave it at the Mission Base for future visits.

Slowly but surely, we're getting there. Many thanks to all those who have donated to help us buy a mobile dental unit for our outreach to South Africa. We are truly grateful.

The journey's not over, though. We're almost three-quarters of the way to getting the full amount needed and donations are still welcome.

Dear NHS Dental patients. Here is some important information about your NHS dental examination (or check up).

An NHS dental check-up (Band 1) includes a full examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth to check for decay or disease, alongside tailored preventative advice, X-rays if needed, and sometimes a scale and polish. The dentist will ask about your general health and discuss a personalized plan for your next visit.

What is Included in an NHS Dental Check-up:

1. Examination: A thorough check of your mouth, teeth, and gums, including a screen for mouth cancer.

2. Preventative Advice: Personalized advice on diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, and oral hygiene habits.
X-rays: Taken if clinically needed to detect decay or bone damage.

3. Scale and Polish: If clinically necessary, this may be included as part of the preventative care, or in some cases, the dentist may recommend a separate appointment (e.g. with a hygienist or dental therapist).

4. Treatment Planning: Discussion of any required treatments and the scheduling of your next visit.

Please note: A deep oral hygiene treatment that is not clinically indicated is not included in an NHS Band 1 treatment. It is an optional service that your dentist may advise if they think it may help improve your oral hygiene. You are free to accept or reject their advice, but they are under no obligation to provide that service as part of an NHS Band 1 treatment.
