**Patient update**
For some time now, all of our dentists have been working at their full hours worked before the pandemic began. However, there are several factors that are having a huge impact on our ability to see anything close to the same number of patients as before. Whenever we use our scaler or drill for any reason (such as all fillings, root treatments, scale and polish, crown/bridge work etc) we create an aerosol which fills the room. As such, any time we do an aerosol generating procedure:
▪️We must isolate that room for up to 60 minutes and run extractors to remove the aerosols from the surgery BEFORE WE CAN RE-ENTER THE ROOM
▪️We must perform a thorough bleach clean of the room to ensure no aerosol particles on the surfaces before bringing the next patient in
▪️All clinical staff must put on and remove significant additional PPE including gowns, full face visors and pressure-fitted masks (recently in very high temperatures)
As such, we only have the ability to see around half the number of patients per day as we could before. This has forced us to make difficult decisions about which treatments to prioritise. Our commitment remains to our registered patients and as such we are not registering any new patients currently. We have a legal and moral obligation to prioritise patients with severe pain, swelling, bleeding or suspected oral cancer. We will also see patients with any dental concern such as a broken tooth, lost filling/crown, broken denture, concern about the skin in their mouth, bleeding gums etc. You can also now book in with the hygienist for a scale and polish, where an oral cancer check will also be carried out.
Unfortunately at this time the dentists do not have any remaining capacity to see routine check ups. We understand the frustration this is causing, however our reception staff are subject to increasing levels of aggression and even abuse and this will not be tolerated.
Please see the attached letter from NHS Lanarkshire explaining that this is the case for the majority of practices.
We thank you for your patience in these very challenging times for dentistry.
