October is 🎀
Knowing what is normal for your breasts can help you notice changes that may need checking.
You don’t need a special technique or to be an expert. Try to check your breasts regularly, around once a month, and get familiar with how they normally look and feel.
When checking, remember: Touch, Look, Check
Touch: Feel your breasts and chest for anything new or unusual. Check the whole area, including up towards your collarbone and underneath your armpits.
Look: Check in the mirror with your arms by your sides and raised. Look for any changes that are unusual for you.
Check: Speak to your GP if you notice something new or unusual.
Signs to look out for include:
• A new lump or swelling in the breast, chest or armpit
• A change in the size or shape of your breast
• Dimpling, puckering or changes to the skin
• A change in colour, such as redness or darker skin
• A change to the ni**le, including it becoming inverted
• A rash or crusting around the ni**le
• Unusual ni**le discharge
• Persistent pain in the breast or armpit
Most breast changes, including lumps, are not cancer, but it is important to have anything new or unusual checked by your GP.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take a few minutes to check yourself and encourage the people you care about to do the same.
