After the most recent announcement yesterday afternoon from The First Minister, we would like to let you all know that the surgery will still be open during this new year lockdown.

It has been confirmed to us by the Chief Dental Officer and Scottish Government that dentistry is part of essential healthcare, and that patients are still permitted travel to attend dental appointments for the treatment of dental disease.

If you have a planned appointment please continue to attend.

If you are undertaking elective cosmetic procedures you will be contacted by a member of our team to put your appointment on hold until restrictions are eased.

If you have any problems please call reception on 0141 7783016 during business hours so we can assist you.

Good morning patients.

All staff at Shettleston Smile hope you have been enjoying your Halloween weekend as much as possible, whilst staying safe amid the current COVID restrictions.

We are very pleased to have had some communication from Greater Glasgow & Clyde healthboard over the weekend to share with you before the Monday morning rush.

We will now be able to offer a wider range of dental treatments FROM November.

HOWEVER, we will still be under restrictions for how many patients we are able to see daily in order that we help maintain social distancing.

It is therefore unfortunately NOT business as usual.

Routine NHS examinations are still unavailable at present.

From tomorrow Monday 2nd November we will be prioritising appointments as we have been since reopening for urgent cases. Those patients who have been waiting longest for their treatment will be able to start getting booked in following urgent and emergency cases within the following weeks. It does need to be stressed however that urgent and emergency care does take priority.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you do have a dental emergency or are in suffering from pain.

We anticipate that it will take us at least several months to work through the backlog of approximately 7 months of treatment.

🚨 NHS Covid-19 Update 🚨

Dear Patients,

As you may be aware, Nicola Sturgeon announced that, as part of phase 3 of the remobilisation from lockdown, dental practices in Scotland would be able to see patients for routine NHS treatment from the 13th July. She also mentioned that this DID NOT include treatment that required aerosol generating procedures, since this has an inherent risk in spreading COVID-19.

As you will appreciate, we are as keen as you are to recommence the full range of care. Unfortunately ALMOST ALL treatments in dentistry require the generation of aerosols. The dental drill, ultrasonic scaler and even washing and drying a tooth produces aerosols. EVEN routine exams require the use of aerosols and as such cannot be fully carried at this time.

This means that, in order to ensure the safety of everyone, the range of dental care that can be offered by us at Shettleston Smile will continue to be extremely limited!

Obviously there are some conditions that are extremely pressing, but require the use of dental drill/ aerosols. In these cases, your dentist will continue to liaise with the Urgent Dental Care Centers, in order to ensure that this urgent treatment is carried out in as safe and protected environment as possible.

Can I ask that you please bear with us through these trying times, and understand that your dentist, like all the other professionals of the NHS family, has your safety uppermost in their mind.

⚠️Stay Safe, Protect Others, Save Lives⚠️

Shettleston Smile Dental Surgery continues to prioritise the safety of our patients and staff; this is of paramount importance. Covid-19 has given all of us unprecedented challenges and as we move forward into week two of ‘Phase 2’ we kindly remind you of our new normal.

We will continue to be available for dental advice and you can contact us on 0141 778 3016, during normal practice hours.
When the practice is closed after business hours or at weekends, you should contact NHS 24 on 111 and they will give you appropriate advice.

After speaking with one of our dentists and after they have followed the strict government protocol, you may be invited into the practice for emergency dental care. If it involves an AGP(aerosol generating procedure), it may be a requirement to refer you on to emergency hub.

🚨 COVID-19 : UPDATE 🚨

As we come to the end of our first week of a phased and cautionary reopen. We would like to thank all our patients for their great understanding & adherence to Scottish Governments advice.

I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate what Phase 2 looks like within the dental setting for Scotland.

NHS dental practices are only allowed to treat emergencies. If an AGP is required for treatment (e.g. drill) then the patient will still have to be referred on to the local emergency hub to start treatment, but you are still required to contact your dentist first.

There has also been a limit imposed to the amount of patient’s we can see in a day, so will have to prioritise those with more urgent needs, we apologise in advance if you have to wait longer than normal for an appointment.

With this in mind, the types of treatment that CAN be provided include:

🟢 Extractions
🟢 Dressings for broken teeth or lost fillings
🟢 Assessment of dental trauma
🟢 Assessment of suspicious oral lesions
🟢 Pain from wisdom teeth or infected sockets
🟢 SOME crown or bridge re-cements.

Examples of services that we CANNOT provide at this time include:

🔴 Routine check ups
🔴 Permanent fillings
🔴 Start or completion of root canal treatment
🔴 Hygiene services (e.g. scale & polish)
🔴 Crown/bridge/veneers
🔴 Dental implants
🔴 New dentures

Attendance to the practice is to be by appointment only, The door will be locked throughout the day,please contact us on 0141 778 3016, if you feel you have an urgent dental problem.

This is a visible change, but we have undergone a number of invisible changes to adhere to NHS & government guidance ( closed door policy, hand sanitiser for all patients, no toilet access & social distancing).
