Another couple of appointments have become available one this Friday 13th and one next Monday 16th June both in the afternoon. I know it’s short notice but just in case anyone needed to get their horses seen quickly!
The photos are of my wife’s new horse Cally a 5 year old Warmblood mare who she is hoping to take Eventing. She is very sweet and luckily has good teeth. Collecting horses is an occupational hazard!!!

We have had a last minute cancellation for Monday on Anglesey therefore have an appointment available for 1-4 horses on Monday on Anglesey or along the A*5 corridor. The photo is meeting some lovely Highland ponies in the Scottish Highlands although they wouldn’t let me look at their teeth!!

We are pleased to announce that Caroline has just passed the BAEDT examination to become a fully qualified Equine Dental Technician. Caroline has worked with us for 3 years and has rasped over a 1000 horse’s teeth. It is a really difficult examination with a low pass rate so it is testament to Caroline’s dedication and proficiency that she managed to pass it first time! Congratulations Caroline!

Interesting case of the month! We saw this 6 year old gelding with a large facial swelling. X-rays demonstrated that the 2nd tooth back on the right (107) had a tooth root infection. Therefore we started continuous IV sedation, placed a nerve block and extracted the infected tooth through the mouth after 2 hours of wobbling. As the horse is very young the tooth was over 8cm long and was a thing of beauty!
We are pleased to say that our patient has recovered well and is already feeling much better!

When Dwynwen met Santa at the weekend he asked her what she would like for Christmas. She said she would like to be loved and cared for again just like last year…
She would like to say to him now, that a visit from the dentist wasn’t quite what she had in mind 😂

Sorry cariad, but twice yearly dentist appointments are what keep your teeth in good enough shape for you to munch on those lovely apples and carrots!

Please meet Ellie who had a painful infected tooth extracted 6 weeks ago. This is Ellie’s first ride 4 weeks post surgery. As you can see she is feeling great and very lively now that the painful tooth has been removed! Before the surgery she was much quieter.

We do see this quite a lot. Because the disease or infection in the tooth develops very slowly, over time the horse gradually becomes quieter over a long period. Therefore, as it happens slowly this behaviour change is not always obvious to the client. Then we remove the painful tooth and almost overnight they have a new horse on their hands. We get comments post operation such as: “He’s much easier to have his head collar put on” or “He’s playing with the other horses more” or, as in this case, “She’s now very lively!”.

It’s always very rewarding when we see the horses happy after having gone through these big surgeries.

A few days ago we posted asking what was this mass that we extracted from inside the cheek of a horse? Thanks for all the brilliant answers I always knew that we have clever clients! The correct answer is, it is a salivary gland stone or to give it its posh name a sialolith. Don’t worry they are very rare this is the first one we have seen in quite a few years hence we were very excited!!
