After having a filling, you can usually eat straight away; however, we recommend sticking to a soft diet for the first 24 hours if possible. Although modern filling materials set quickly and are strong enough for normal function, the tooth may feel slightly sensitive after the procedure, and softer foods will help keep you comfortable while the tooth settles.

Good options for the first day include foods such as pasta, soup, yoghurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, rice, or soft sandwiches. Try to avoid very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods during this time, as these can put extra pressure on the newly treated tooth and may cause discomfort.

If you have had a local anaesthetic, it is very important to avoid hot food and drinks until the numbness has completely worn off. This is because you may not be able to feel heat properly and could accidentally burn your mouth without realising. The numbness usually lasts a few hours.

You should also be careful not to bite your lip, cheek, or tongue while you are still numb, as this can happen very easily without you noticing at the time and may lead to soreness afterwards.

After the first 24 hours, you should be able to return to eating normally. If you experience sensitivity for a few days, this is normal, but if it persists or you have any concerns, please contact the practice for advice.

May 30th – Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?
If you’re thinking about straightening your teeth but don’t like the idea of metal braces, you might be wondering whether Invisalign is right for you. Invisalign is a clear aligner system that gradually moves teeth into a better position using a series of removable, nearly invisible trays.

You may be a good candidate for Invisalign if you have mild to moderate orthodontic issues such as crooked teeth, gaps, overcrowding, or minor bite problems like an overbite, underbite, or crossbite. Invisalign is popular with adults and teenagers because the aligners are discreet and can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and special occasions.

However, Invisalign is not suitable for everyone. More complex cases, such as severe bite problems or very rotated teeth, may still require traditional braces or other orthodontic treatments. The only way to know for sure is to consult with a dentist or orthodontist who offers Invisalign treatment. They will usually take digital scans of your teeth and show you a simulation of how your smile could look after treatment.

Another important factor is commitment. Invisalign aligners must be worn for 22 hours per day to work effectively. If they are not worn consistently, treatment may take longer or not work as planned.

Overall, Invisalign is a great option for many people who want a straighter smile in a more comfortable and discreet way. If you’d like to find out whether Invisalign is right for you, book a complimentary consultation with our Treatment Coordinator by calling us today on 01392 272385.

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Did you know?

Sharks have around 50,000 teeth over the course of their lifetime, making them one of the most fascinating creatures in the ocean. Unlike humans, who only grow two sets of teeth, sharks are constantly growing and replacing theirs. Their teeth are arranged in rows, and when one tooth falls out, another simply moves forward to take its place. This process can happen as often as every one to two weeks, depending on the species.
Shark teeth are not attached to gums like human teeth. Instead, they are embedded directly into the skin tissue of the mouth, which is why they fall out and replace so easily. Because sharks lose so many teeth, the ocean floor is actually covered with countless fossilised shark teeth, some dating back millions of years.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Teeth During Weekend Treats
Weekends are often a time to indulge in sweet treats, snacks, and special beverages. While enjoying these foods is part of life, it’s important to take simple steps to protect your teeth and prevent cavities.

One effective approach is timing your treats wisely. Eating sugary snacks with meals rather than as standalone bites can reduce the impact on your teeth. Saliva production increases during meals, helping wash away food particles and neutralize acids that cause decay.

Another tip is to rinse with water after indulging. Swishing water around your mouth can help remove leftover sugars and acids, lowering the risk of tooth enamel damage. Chewing sugar-free gum for 10–15 minutes can achieve a similar effect by stimulating saliva flow.

Maintaining good brushing and flossing habits is essential. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day removes plaque and strengthens enamel. If you enjoy acidic drinks like soda or fruit juice, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to avoid weakening enamel.

Finally, choose teeth-friendly alternatives when possible. Fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, and nuts are not only delicious but also support oral health.

By following these simple steps- smart timing, rinsing, consistent oral hygiene, and healthier snack choices—you can enjoy your weekend treats without compromising your smile. Small habits make a big difference, keeping your teeth strong and your smile bright.

What causes teeth grinding and how can you stop it?

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common condition in which a person unconsciously clenches or grinds their teeth, often during sleep but sometimes while awake. It can affect both children and adults and may lead to jaw pain, headaches, worn teeth, and disrupted sleep if left unmanaged.
One of the main causes of teeth grinding is stress and anxiety. Emotional tension often shows up physically, and clenching the jaw becomes an unconscious response. Sleep-related factors also play a major role. People with sleep disorders such as snoring or sleep apnea are more likely to experience nighttime grinding. In addition, lifestyle habits like excessive caffeine intake, alcohol consumption, smoking, or irregular sleep schedules can increase the risk.

Dental issues may contribute as well. Misaligned teeth or an abnormal bite can sometimes trigger grinding, although psychological and neurological factors are now considered more significant causes. Certain medications, particularly some antidepressants, may also list bruxism as a side effect.

Stopping teeth grinding usually involves addressing the underlying cause. Stress management techniques such as exercise, mindfulness, or relaxation routines before bed can reduce nighttime tension. Improving sleep hygiene—going to bed at consistent times, limiting screens before sleep, and avoiding stimulants in the evening—can also help.

Dentists often recommend a custom night guard, a protective device worn while sleeping that prevents tooth damage and reduces pressure on the jaw. In more severe cases, treatments may include physiotherapy, bite correction, or medical evaluation for sleep disorders.

If symptoms such as jaw soreness, tooth sensitivity, or frequent headaches occur, seeking dental advice is important. Early intervention can protect teeth, relieve discomfort, and improve overall sleep quality.

Backpacking and student travel are all about adventure, flexibility, and new experiences—but it’s easy for oral health routines to slip along the way. With a bit of planning, you can keep your smile healthy without missing out on the fun.

When packing, keep your dental essentials lightweight and accessible. A travel-sized toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss, and a compact mouthwash can easily fit into your backpack. Having them on hand makes it easier to brush regularly, even in hostels, airports, or on overnight journeys.

Staying hydrated is especially important when you’re constantly on the move. Long bus rides, flights, and busy travel days can lead to dry mouth, increasing the risk of bad breath and tooth decay. Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day.

Backpacking often means snacking on the go and trying new (sometimes sugary) foods. While it’s part of the experience, try to limit constant snacking and balance it with healthier options when you can. If brushing isn’t possible, rinsing your mouth with water or chewing sugar-free gum is a simple alternative.

Before heading off, it’s a good idea to book an oral health assessment to catch any potential issues early. Dealing with dental problems abroad can be stressful and expensive.

Finally, keep your toothbrush clean and replace it if it gets worn out during your trip.

With a few smart habits, you can enjoy your travels while keeping your teeth and gums in great shape.
