The importance of correct incisor alignment.

Incisor make up one third of the horses teeth, yet they are commonly ignored. There are two reasons for this.
- One, a horse will require sedation in order to correct them, they have a single root, causing much higher sensitivity to vibration. Horses will not tolerate this, the way they do for molar work.
- Two, aligning the incisors correctly, is far more challenging than rasping the molars, they have to meet precisely, as they are used for cutting not grinding. A fraction of a mm can cause problems.

It takes years of practice to learn, how to correct incisor malocclusions, to learn correct angles, precision contact and balanced to molar occlusion.
Yet the incisors influence biomechanics of the horse in a big way, restricting the mandible, restricts full body movement of the horse. They can also cause great challenges, in chewing efficiency for you horse, by limiting occlusion (contact) on one side, in the case of diagonal bites.

CPD is essential as an Equine Dental Technician, the industry is always developing, knowledge and skills must be kept on point. I will be returning to trident to teach new students and have my work checked by my peers. I will also be attending the conference, to listen to world renowned speakers in equine dentistry.

It supprises me just how many equine owners, do not know, this information!

This post is for the purpose of spreading knowledge and education to all equine owners.

I want to make a couple things clear!

1. This post by no means, covers all information, I couldn't possibly fit it in one poster. It's the general gist.
2. It's not for me to decide, about the place of catagory 1 equine dental technicians.
3. If the poster doesn't make it 100% clear, catagory 2 equine dental technicians, cannot sedate horses! But we can work on them.

Sedated vs unsedated, there are pros and cons to both. Everyone who knows me, knows I am a strong advocate for sedation when appropriate. Purely due to the precision and ability to measure and work around the horses occlusion. That said, most of my work is on unsedated horses. Which works very well, when horses have regular checks. Another approach, is having your horse sedated once every 3 years.
