Should you use mouthwash after you brush?

This is a common misconception in dentistry and one that we’re on a mission to resolve!

Mouthwash is an excellent tool in your overall dental routine, but not as part of brushing.

When you brush your teeth, the goal is to leave the remaining toothpaste on your teeth without rinsing. This means that the fluoride in the toothpaste continues to provide protection for your teeth.

If you use moutwash straight after brushing then you’re basically washing away the concentrated fluoride from the toothpaste, and replacing it with a less concentrated version in the form of mouthwash.

So try using mouthwash at other times throughout the day. Maybe after a meal or to freshen up before a meeting.

Do you use mouthwash after brushing your teeth?

If so, you could be doing more harm than good.

It's a common misconception that mouthwash should be used after brushing.

In reality, it's actually much better as a standalone tool used to freshen up after meals or at other times throughout the day outside of your brushing routine.

When you brush your teeth, the best thing to do is to spit out any excess toothpaste, but don't rinse. You want the remaining toothpaste to actually stay on your teeth as this means the fluoride is still working to protect your enamel.

Save this for later, and feel free to drop any other dental questions in the comments.

Every adult in Scotland can have an NHS orthodontic assessment if they think they need treatment.

It's not always very well known, but if you have concerns about things like overcrowding or your bite, then it's definitely something to consider.

Your dentist can help you to understand whether it's likely that you would qualify for free treatment or reduced treatment costs on the NHS, and can submit a referral direcly via our website.
We'll then reach out you directly to set up your initial consultation.

We currently don't have a waiting list for NHS orthodontic treatment, so if it's something you've been thinking about then now is a great time to get the ball rolling!

Your consultation will be completely free of charge, but if it does transpire that your circumstances don't qualify for free NHS treatment, we will of course lay out all of your options as a private patient so that you know exactly where you stand and can make an informed decision on how to proceed.

Feel free to share with anybody who could benefit from this. 🦷

When life gets busy, simple habits can make all the difference to your oral health.

Looking after your teeth and gums doesn't have to take over your life. But we know that when life is throwing a lot of things at you, it can be one of the first things to drop off your priority list.

It doesn't need to be complicated though, there are a few simple things you can do to take care of your smile:

🦷 Brush twice a day for at least 2 minutes. One of these times should be right before bedtime.
🦷 Floss daily.
🦷 Use interdental or TePe brushes to clean gaps between teeth.
🦷 Stick to a consistent routine.
🦷 Attend regular check-ups with your dentist.

It might seem like a lot at first, but once you're in a consistent routine, it's just a few minutes each day to keep on top of your dental health.

How should you actually brush your teeth? 🪥

It might seem like an obvious question, but lots of people were never actually taught how to brush their teeth well, so here’s an overview of how Josh, our Specialist Orthodontist brushes his own teeth!

The key thing is to focus on individual quadrants in your mouth, taking 30 seconds on each to really focus and make sure you’re covering all the surfaces. Then a general scrub around the mouth and the tongue to make sure you’ve reached everywhere.

At night time, or perhaps in the morning if that’s when you have a few more minutes available, make some time available for flossing and/or using interdental brushes to reach gaps between your teeth. This ensures that you’re cleaning all the surfaces of your teeth, even when they’re a bit harder to reach.

A good dental routine doesn’t need to take up too much time, but setting aside just a few minutes both morning and night to focus on cleaning your teel and gums properly will do wonders for your long term oral health.

When you have braces fitted, you might need bite raisers if you have an overbite and your teeth overlap.

It’s something that often comes as a surprise, but the process is there to protect you from damaging the braces, or your teeth, if you bite down on the braces.

It can sound a little strange at first, but you’ll get used to them very quickly and they really help to support your long term treatment plan.

What questions do you have about braces or orthodontics? Drop them in the comments or send us a message and we’ll answer as soon as possible.

What is gum disease?

We get asked this a lot, and it can be quite complex to explain.

Really, it comes down to inflammation in the gums, but it depends on your own susceptibility levels.

Some people can get away with less thorough brushing, but some people’s immune system targets plaque and bacteria, so as a result their gums get quite inflamed.

When you come in for a hygiene appointment with us we’ll always highlight areas of your mouth that you might be missing when you’re cleaning your teeth, and we’ll provide you with the techniques to keep things as clean as possible.

We always recommend a dental check-up every 6 months, and a visit to the Hygienist every 3-6 months depending on your own susceptibililty levels.

So there you have it...

If you’re concerned about gum disease at all then please do get in touch to book an appointment. As with everything related to your dental health, prompt action can make all the difference when it comes to treating and preventing issues.

Give us a call on 0131 228 4030 and our reception team will chat to you about booking you in.
