World Su***de Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent su***des, with various activities around the world.
This year's theme for world su***de prevention day is creating hope through action and is aimed at creating a reminder that there is an alternative to su***de. It aims to highlight that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling. As a member of society, as a child, as a parent, as a friend, as a colleague or as a neighbour we can all play a part in supporting those experiencing a suicidal crisis or those bereaved by su***de.
Small Talk
Did you know that a little small talk might be all it takes to help someone? Whether you're in the queue at the supermarket, waiting for the microwave at work or sat on public transport during your daily commute, just take a minute to say hello, comment on the weather, tell someone you like their shoes… anything to create a little small talk. You never know, you might make a massive impact on someone's day.
Ask "How are you?" a second time
When you ask someone if they are ok, why don't you start asking them the same question a second time. The first time you ask, "how are you?" the response will probably be "I am fine." If you ask, "how are you?" a second time you may receive a more honest answer and give the person the opening to having a conversation they didn't think they could have.
How to start a conversation with someone you are concerned about
You may be concerned about a family member, friend or colleague. You may have seen changes in their behaviour. A good question to ask is "Is there anything you want to get off your chest." They may not be ready to talk but you can let them know that you are there for them and willing to listen when they would like to talk. Then regularly check in with them. We all recognise it is good to talk but it takes courage and is generally more difficult for men to open-up. Do not assume someone else will be asking them if they are ok and leave it there. If you are concerned, try and start a conversation.
What to do in a crisis?
If you ever feel you need help then try the following;
Speak to someone you trust
Get to a place of safety. This could be a hospital, police station or somewhere that someone else could provide support
Call a crisis helpline. They are trained to listen without judgement and will try to help
Helplines
There are so many resources out there to support with thoughts of su***de and you do not need to be at crisis point before you reach out.
