Not every dental concern can be fixed with a quick ‘feather duster’ cleaning or filling.

Sometimes, you need a second opinion or the insight of a specialist.

Here are 3 signs it might be time to book a consultation with our specialist team:

1️⃣ You’ve been told you might lose a tooth, have
gum disease, bone loss or tooth mobility? A specialist can assess and create a plan to save your tooth if possible.

2️⃣ You have ongoing issues that don’t seem to resolve; for example
recurring pain, inflammation, abscess or failed treatment? A filling or crown not staying put?! It could need more advanced care.

3️⃣ You’ve been referred, or advised to seek a second opinion
We often support patients sent by their general dentist for complex or specialist treatment.

🦷 Our practice is led by Dr George Cherukara - a registered Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics, Endodontics and Prosthodontics.

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to talk it through.

There’s no pressure - just honest, expert advice.

Think brushing harder = cleaner teeth?

It’s one of the most common habits we see but it can actually do more harm than good.

🦷 Brushing too hard can:

- Wear away enamel
- Cause gum shrinkage
- Result in painful sensitivity

Over time, this can lead to long term damage!

✅ Here’s how to brush better, not harder:

- The use a soft bristled toothbrush
- Hold it like a pen (not a hammer!)
- Gently move in small circles, especially near the gum line
- Don’t forget to clean between teeth with interdental brushes

If your gums are sore, your teeth feel sensitive, or your toothbrush always looks frayed… it might be time to rethink your routine.

Our dental team can show you exactly how to protect your teeth and gums for the long term.

Do you have diabetes?

If so, it’s important to have your gum health checked regularly.

Research shows that gum disease can make diabetes harder to manage, and uncontrolled diabetes can, in turn, make gum problems worse.

It’s a two-way street and often a hidden one.

That’s why at Sandy McChesney & Associates, we take a team based approach to gum care, with:

🔹 A registered Specialist in Periodontics
🔹 Skilled hygienists
🔹 And most importantly… you, at the centre

Together, we focus on early diagnosis, long term prevention, and personalised care that keeps both your mouth and overall health in better balance.

Team based care also helps keep the costs of treatment lower and the results more sustainable.

📞 DM us or call the practice to arrange a hygienist appointment so that we can assess your gum health.

Gum disease is more than just sore gums.

The severe form, periodontitis, can creep in slowly, destroying the bone that holds your teeth in place.

You may not notice it until a tooth becomes loose, or a gum boil appears.

At this stage, treatment becomes harder… and the risk of tooth loss rises sharply.

But the impact doesn’t stop there.

🧠 Research suggests links between advanced gum disease and:

Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease
Arthritis
Kidney disease
Even Alzheimer’s

It can also affect your ability to chew, impacting nutrition and long term health - especially in older adults.

Hence we say “Put the mouth back in the body.”

Your gums aren’t separate from your health, they’re a huge part of it.

These small actions can make a big difference to your long term wellbeing:

✅ Regular hygiene visits
✅ Early gum disease assessments
✅ Specialist led care

Book a gum health check or hygiene visit with our team - your body and smile will thank you.

3 things you can do this weekend to boost your oral health:

✅ Clean between your teeth - ideally with interdental brushes
✅ Drink more water (especially if you’ve had coffee, beer or wine)
✅ Don’t skip your evening brush - even on weekends 😉

Small things = long-term results.

Gum disease is more common than you think.

In the UK, it’s estimated that nearly half of all adults, and over 60% of people aged 65+, have some level of periodontitis - the more serious form of gum disease that affects the bone around the teeth.

The early signs are often painless… which is why so many people don’t realise it’s there.

🦷 Bleeding when brushing?
🦷 Persistent bad breath?
🦷 Loose teeth or gum recession?

These may be signs of gum disease and the sooner it’s caught, the better.

At Sandy McChesney & Associates, our team is led by a registered Specialist in Periodontics, as well as our skilled dentist and hygienist, offering expert diagnosis and care for anyone concerned about their gum health.

The key to managing gum disease isn’t just cleaning, it’s working together with your dental team to create a long term plan that works.

If you’re unsure, speak to your dentist or book a consultation with us.
