Lat's Chat about Baby's dental visits...

We are always asked this question: when should I take my baby to the dentist for the first time?
It is best to discuss this with us first, but as a general rule of thumb you can bring your baby to your own routine check-ups. This can help the baby to get used to the surroundings. We will be able to offer advice and prescribe medicines for teething pains, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. The baby's own check-ups can start any time from about 6 months or from when the teeth start to appear.

Let's Chat about Dental Care and Pregnancy...

Does pregnancy cause damage to teeth?
No. It is not true that pregnancy causes tooth problems through a lack of calcium, or that you will lose one tooth for each child you have.
What about smoking and alcohol in pregnancy?
Smoking and drinking in pregnancy can lead to an underweight baby and also affect your unborn baby's dental health. An underweight baby is more likely to have poor teeth because of the tooth enamel not being formed properly. It is worth remembering that the adult teeth are already growing in the jaws, below the baby teeth, when your baby is born. So some babies whose mothers smoke and drink in pregnancy will have badly formed adult teeth too.

Let's Chat about Baby Teeth

When will my baby's teeth appear?
Your baby should start teething at around 6 months old and will continue until all 20 baby teeth come through. At around 6 years old, the adult teeth will begin to appear. This will continue until all the adult teeth, except the wisdom teeth, have come through at around 14 years old.
It is important to protect your child’s first teeth against decay so that adult teeth have a chance to fully develop before they come through. It’s never too early to start caring for your baby’s teeth.

Let's Chat about Dental Care During Pregnancy...

We are often asked if dental treatment is safe during pregnancy?
The quick answer is, yes. There should be no problems with routine treatment. If you are not sure what your treatment would involve, talk about all the options with your dentist. Some current guidelines suggest that old amalgam fillings should not be removed during pregnancy, and that new ones should not be put in. Talk to your dentist about having a different type of filling if you are unsure.
What if I need dental x-rays?
Usually, dentists prefer to avoid dental x-rays during pregnancy if possible. However, if you need root canal treatment you may need to have an x-ray.

Let's Chat about...Dental care for mother and baby.

Over the next few posts, we'll chat about what you should and shouldn't do at this important time of your life.
Why is dental care for mother and baby important?
Your dental health can suffer during your pregnancy. It is also important to look after both your and your baby's dental health in the early months of your baby's life to help make sure you both have healthy mouths in the future. There may also be a link between good gum health and good birth outcomes: for example, you may be less likely to have your baby early if you have healthy gums.
Do I need to see my dentist during pregnancy?
Yes. Because of hormone changes during pregnancy, some women's dental health needs more care during this time. For example, you may notice that your gums seem to bleed more easily.
Why are my gums bleeding?
You may notice that your gums become sore and swollen during pregnancy, and they may bleed. This is due to hormone changes in your body. This means that you must keep your teeth and gums clean and visit your dentist regularly. You may also need appointments with the dental team for thorough cleaning and to help keep plaque and tartar from building up, and for advice on caring for your teeth at home.

A Christmas Poem from us to you...

'Twas the night before Christmas and dentists were off
Not a creature was stirring, not even to cough
Murray and Kenny had escaped to the pub
Trying to look like Santa eating plenty of grub
When out on the road there arose such a clatter
Thery sprang from their seats to see what was the matter
The man at the bar commanded “Gentleman sit,
It is only that old man St Nic”
Sure enough it was he with a shiny brand new drill in hand
Murray and Kenny were ecstatic
With thoughts of a present so very fantastic
They danced and pranced by the light of the moon, the silvery moon
Oops…sorry, wrong poem, but coming soon
Off home they trotted like little reindeer
With thoughts of presents and Christmas cheer
To use that new drill would be such a thrill
And oh my how the patients would trill
So when you next sit in that big dental chair
With that shiny drill an inch from your ear
Remember those cute reindeer that brought it here
And of that awful noise, do not remotely fear

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night
