What a journey it has been , I am lost for words. From the moment we set off to Tanzania there has not been a dull moment. Cycling challenge was beyond my expectations, tough physically most days followed by tears of joy and sometimes of exhaustion, when it was finally completed . My fellow colleagues and now friends for life were all amazing, supportive and kind. The second week was totally different. The outreach Clinic was in Misungwi / Muwanza districts ,in the middle of no where .Every day through this trip ,we were up at 5 breakfast at 6 .30 leave at 7 . Bus took more than one hour to get there through muddy roads . Then it was non stop flow of people , young and old . Every day a different village arrived , wait for hours to be seen and treated . Most days we had kids from different schools and lots of them needed several tooth extractions which was heart breaking .
We treated in total 834 adults, 212 children and we made 150 dentures in 5 days! # #
I taught 4 dental therapists passing my clinical knowledge and hints and tips about different treatments. It was so well received that makes me want to cry. These professionals will continue working in their own comunities to help their own people and it feels we have done something invaluable and that is leaving our legacy behind.
we are not leaving a void , the good work will continue in the hands of these professionals !
Now that this extraordinary and one in a life time journey comes to conclusion , I am thoroughly grateful for this opportunity. I met so many extraordinary individuals , colleagues, fellow cyclists , non dental volunteers and lovely patients. It has made me more humble and to appreciate what we have and what we need to cherish more and that is small things in life which makes life worth living and precious.
I would like to thank all of my patients , friends and family in UK and wider world who supported my cause and this amazing charity. I have to say Farewell Africa, Farewell Tanzania .You have been amazing !❤️
