Composite bonding looks gorgeous in the “after” photo, but what happens six months down the line?

Here’s what I’ve learned placing composite day-in, day-out: the prettiest smile means nothing if it’s trapping food or causing your gums to bleed. I’ve seen too many patients come in with inflamed gums because their previous bonding wasn’t contoured properly around the gum line.

When I’m building up a smile with composite, I’m obsessing over two things:

1. Gum health first. If your gums are inflamed before we start, we sort that out. No shortcuts. Bonding on top of unhealthy tissue is like painting over damp. It won’t last, and it’ll cause problems.

2. Contour at the margins. The junction between composite and tooth needs to be seamless, especially near the gum. Any overhang or rough edge becomes a plaque trap, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and eventually bone loss. Not dramatic, just quiet, slow damage that undoes all the aesthetic work.
