Untreated Dental Infections Can Spread to the Face — And Become Medical Emergencies

A dental abscess is not just a tooth issue. It is a bacterial infection confined inside bone.

When treatment is delayed, the infection does not stay limited to the tooth. Bacteria spread through bone into surrounding facial spaces.

As the infection progresses, swelling increases. Pressure builds within these tight spaces. Tissues become inflamed and painful.
This can lead to facial swelling, difficulty breathing, high fever.

At this stage, the condition is no longer purely dental. It becomes a medical emergency requiring hospital admission, intravenous antibiotics, and often surgical drainage.

Facial swelling from a tooth infection is not cosmetic. It is a clinical warning sign of spreading infection.

Early intervention — root canal treatment, drainage, or extraction — prevents bacteria from reaching critical anatomical spaces.
Dental infections start locally. They do not remain local when neglected.

Nail biting may look harmless — but it silently damages enamel and transfers harmful bacteria directly into your mouth.

When you repeatedly bite your nails, your front teeth absorb abnormal mechanical stress. Over time, this can lead to enamel micro-fractures, subtle chipping, and visible incisal wear. In patients with fillings or bonding, the constant pressure can even compromise restorations. It’s a slow process, but the damage accumulates.

There’s also a microbial concern.

Fingernails can harbor environmental debris and transient harmful bacteria. Each time the nails enter the mouth, microorganisms are transferred directly into the oral cavity. While the immune system can manage occasional exposure, repeated contamination increases bacterial load and may contribute to oral inflammation — especially in children and individuals with weaker immunity.

Chronic nail biting is also associated with:
• Gum irritation
• Orthodontic complications
• Increased front tooth wear
• Additional stress on the Jaw joint

This is not just a cosmetic issue. It is a mechanical and biological risk factor affecting oral health.

Breaking the habit protects more than your nails — it protects your enamel.

More foam does not mean more cleaning.
Foam is mainly produced by surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).

Their role is to spread toothpaste evenly and create that familiar “clean” sensation.

They do not mechanically remove dental biofilm.

Actual plaque removal depends on:
• Controlled mechanical movement of toothbrush bristles
• A full 2-minute brushing time
• Proper angulation along the gumline
• Mild abrasives that help disrupt biofilm and polish surface stains
• Fluoride that strengthens enamel and supports remineralization

Foam enhances perception.

Brushing technique determines effectiveness.

Excessive lather can create a false sense of completion — causing some people to stop too early, leaving biofilm along the gumline.

Clean teeth result from controlled mechanical disruption combined with protective chemistry — not from the amount of bubbles produced.

With aging, the number and responsiveness of taste buds gradually decline, often starting in the fourth or fifth decade of life.
Taste buds become smaller and regenerate at a slower rate, leading to reduced flavor intensity.

Sweet and salty sensations are typically the first to diminish, while bitter tastes tend to remain relatively more pronounced.

Salivary flow also decreases with age, limiting the ability of dissolved food particles to interact effectively with taste receptors.

In addition, age-related reduction in olfactory function further weakens overall flavor perception, since smell plays a major role in how taste is experienced.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month 🦷

Wondering when to bring your child to see the Dentist?

Make an appointment to see a dentist as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts. It might seem early, but introducing your child to the dentist at a young age can help them get used to all the different sights, sounds, and smells. It may even reduce their chance of developing a fear of the dentist too!

For your child’s first dental appointment it’s all about creating a positive experience. Here at Middlewich street we always welcome little smiles 😊
