What does your gum health have to do with your brain health?

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day, and I want to talk about an area of health that I find particularly interesting as a dentist with a special interest in periodontal disease.

For years, we’ve been taught to think of our mouths as somehow separate from the rest of our bodies.

They aren’t.

We know that periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammatory condition, and researchers continue to investigate the associations between periodontal disease, oral bacteria, systemic inflammation and conditions elsewhere in the body, including cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

I want to be very clear here.

That does NOT mean gum disease causes Alzheimer’s.

The relationship is complex, research is ongoing, and there are many different factors involved in the development of dementia.

But it does give us another important reason to stop treating oral health as simply being about whether you have a toothache or a cavity.

Your gums matter.

Bleeding when you brush shouldn’t simply be accepted as normal.

Persistent inflammation shouldn’t be ignored.

And prevention matters long before something starts to hurt.

At Curzon Park Dental, this is why I’m so passionate about looking beyond individual teeth and understanding the whole person sitting in my chair.

I ask questions.

I look at your gum health.

I consider your wider health and lifestyle.

And, where appropriate, we talk about what we can do to reduce risk and improve your oral health over the long term.

Because the more we learn about the relationship between the mouth and the rest of the body, the clearer one thing becomes:

It’s never just about teeth.

On World Alzheimer’s Day, perhaps it’s another reminder that looking after our health means looking at the whole picture. 💛
