Braces & mouth guards

🥊 Now that we are slowly returning to normal life, the children will be busy with their sports 🏑

🦷 If your child is currently wearing removable or fixed braces, it is important to think about whether they need an orthodontic mouth guard.

🦷 When taking part in any contact sports, rugby/hockey/boxing etc it is important to wear an orthodontic mouth guard to protect your teeth from any accidents.

Getting used to your functional (twin-block) appliance...

🦷 A Functional appliance is a removable brace for the top and bottom teeth. It helps correct how the teeth bite together, if the top teeth are too far in front of the bottom teeth.

🦷 Your teeth and your brace should be thoroughly cleaned after every meal using your toothbrush and toothpaste.

🦷 You must remove the brace for contact sports e.g. rugby, boxing and stored in a safe container. You must remember to put the brace back in as soon as you have finished your activity.

🦷 The brace will feel strange at first and will make your speech sound different. Don’t worry about any of these difficulties they will wear off quickly if you continue to wear the brace.

🦷 It’s best to be assessed any time from around the age of seven so we can detect potential problems and plan any necessary orthodontic treatment according to the changes in your child’s mouth. Before treatment starts our patients nearly always have their second teeth through, unless there is another reason for early intervention such as an impacted tooth that needs urgent attention.

🦷 In most cases it is easier to straighten teeth in under-18s and early treatment has the added benefit of avoiding permanent damage to your child’s teeth and gums from trapped food and poor oral hygiene, because straight teeth are easier to clean.
