tive Dentistry. He was awarded specialist membership at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2016. He previously completed membership exams at Royal College of Surgeons England. Dr Olley undertakes work in Restorative Dentistry, Fixed, Removable and Implant Prosthodontics and General Dentistry. Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics are areas of dentistry concerned with the replacement of missing teeth and associated soft/ hard tissues with prostheses (including crowns, bridges, dentures) which may be fixed or removable, or supported/ retained by implants.

Dr Olley also carries out dental and scientific research to improve Oral and General Health and inform practice. He has undertaken extensive research in Craniofacial Sciences and Tooth Tissue Regeneration, Public Health, and collaborative Clinical and Scientific studies. He has particular expertise in the Management of Tooth Wear and Tooth Sensitivity. Dr Olley has worked with industry, developing and running several large clinical trials. He has written > 40 peer reviewed publications (highest citation per paper >120 and H-Index >13) in Dental and Scientific High Impact Journals. He has written book chapters in Tooth Wear. He achieved a number of National and International Research Awards, Grants and Publications for Tissue Research and Disease Management, Clinical Trials, Public Health and Developmental Biology. Dr Olley originally undertook research with a BSc in Craniofacial Science. He then carried out research in Dental Public Health and then a PhD in Restorative Dentistry with clinical studies. He published work in Journals including Frontiers in Physiology, the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Journal of Dentistry, Caries Research, et al, and a book chapter. Subjects include long terms studies investigating Crowns and Veneers, approaches to Oral Rehabilitation, Measurement & Management of Disease, Public Health, Clinical trials and Education, Research & Clinical Prosthodontics in practice and Oral Surgery. Dr Olley is interested in applying Science & Health Service Research to improving Oral & Dental health.

In education, Dr Olley has worked as a Tutor, Lecturer, External Examiner and Clinical Senior Lecturer. Dr Olley holds teaching qualifications in higher education. He has been involved in teaching for over 17 years. He also has experience training dental care professionals, dentists and postgraduates, and in developing teaching and clinical practice. Dr Olley is an automatic ongoing member of SCADA, which engages the next generation of dental professionals to enhance research and improve global oral health. He is a member of various other professional associations including the British Society of Prosthodontics and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also a Royal College of Psychiatry accredited Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner.

I'm often asked about different types of pockets that develop around teeth in periodontal or gum disease. This photo shows a model of teeth. The clue here is that many of the teeth (especially on the left) appear shorter than normal and this is due to so-called 'false pockets' which appear, perhaps incorrectly, as though they are growing over the teeth. In contrast, true pockets extend down the root surface below the gum. True and false pocketing may coexist. Either way, seeing your dental care professional and thorough oral hygiene is essential to manage periodontal / gum disease
