I'm still buzzing from the most incredible two days at ! ✨️

I came away feeling inspired, energised and even more passionate about the work I do. There's something so special about being surrounded by people who genuinely care, who are curious, who ask questions and who share that same desire to make a difference to the people we care for.

For me, learning has never just been about gaining more knowledge. It's about those moments when something suddenly clicks, when you begin to see a familiar clinical finding through a different lens, and when you realise there's another piece of the puzzle worth exploring.

And there were so many of those moments over these two days!

As an airway-focused dentist, the discussions around breathing, neurodevelopment, the nervous system, fascia and oral function have given me so much to think about and bring back into my clinical practice.

What made it even more special was the people! ❤️

Dentists, paediatricians, osteopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists, SLTs, IBCLCs, midwives, myofunctional therapists and so many more, coming together from 10 different countries!

How wonderful is that? It shows just how far these conversations are reaching and how much we can gain from listening to and learning from one another.

A heartfelt thank you to all the world-class experts who so generously shared their knowledge, experience and insights. I'm incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from each and every one of you. ❤️

If there's one message that continues to resonate with me, it's that the tongue is never just about the tongue. We need to understand function, recognise the connections and see the whole person.

I'll be sharing some of my biggest takeaways from the individual lectures over the next few days, including the insights I'm particularly excited to explore in my assessments and patient care.

The conversations are happening. Let's keep them going! Thank you ❤️

What if your child's difficulty concentrating isn't just about attention… but also about how they're sleeping? 🧠💤

As an airway-focused dentist, one of the things I want parents to understand is that poor sleep can sometimes look like ADHD.

Research has identified an association between sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnoea, and difficulties with attention, behaviour and emotional regulation in children.

And here's what makes this particularly interesting…

Unlike adults, who often become sleepy, children experiencing disrupted sleep may appear hyperactive, restless, impulsive or struggle to concentrate.

🚩 Signs worth noticing:

- Snoring or noisy breathing at night
- Mouth breathing during sleep
- Restless sleep or frequent waking
- Teeth grinding
- Difficulty concentrating or regulating emotions during the day

A child can have ADHD and sleep-disordered breathing together. One does not exclude the other, and sleep apnoea does not necessarily cause ADHD.

But identifying and treating an underlying sleep or breathing problem may improve sleep quality and some daytime behavioural symptoms.

This is why I look beyond the teeth.

During my comprehensive airway and functional assessments, I explore breathing, sleep, tongue function, jaw development and oral habits to help identify concerns that may warrant further investigation.

💬 Parents, does your child snore, mouth breathe or sleep restlessly?

Don't dismiss these signs as simply normal childhood habits.

🦷 What if your dentist checked your teeth… but missed the way you breathe?

Your mouth is more than a smile. It may hold clues to how you breathe, sleep and function.

Mouth breathing. Teeth grinding. Crowded teeth. Restless sleep. A narrow jaw. Poor tongue posture.

What if these aren't isolated problems, but clues worth connecting? 👀

This is where airway-focused dentistry changes the conversation.

At Dr JJ Airway, I look beyond cavities and crooked teeth to explore the relationship between breathing, jaw development, sleep, bite, posture and oral function.

Because healthy teeth are important.

But understanding the person behind the smile matters just as much.

✨ Screening creates awareness.
✨ Awareness creates action.

The question isn't just whether your teeth are healthy. It's whether anyone has looked at the bigger picture.

📍 Ready to discover what your mouth might be telling you?

Don't wait for the signs to become harder to ignore.

Book your comprehensive airway and functional assessment with Dr JJ today.

🧠 I love those moments when something you learn makes you look at your everyday clinical work in a completely new way!

That's exactly how I felt after attending Jo Rodhouse Neurodevelopmental Therapy masterclass on primitive reflexes.

As an airway-focused dentist, I'm always curious about how breathing, sleep and oral function develop and this gave me another perspective.

👶 From a newborn's rooting and sucking reflexes to the coordination of feeding, swallowing and breathing, there's so much happening from the very beginning!

💡 So what am I taking into practice?

I'm introducing selected primitive reflex observations into my comprehensive airway and functional assessments, where appropriate, and referring out when further assessment is indicated.

These observations aren't a diagnostic test for airway problems, but they may add useful developmental context.

A huge thank you to Jo Rodhouse Neurodevelopmental Therapy for such an inspiring masterclass! ❤️

✨ The mouth tells us part of the story. Understanding the child as a whole helps us see more of it.

🧠💚 World Mental Health Day | 10th October

When was the last time you stopped and noticed how you were breathing? 🌿

It's something we do thousands of times a day, often without giving it a second thought.

But have you noticed how your breathing changes when you're stressed, overwhelmed or anxious?

You might hold your breath, sigh more often, breathe faster or find yourself breathing through your mouth.

💚 What fascinates me is that the connection works both ways.

Our emotions influence our breathing, but our breathing patterns can also influence how we feel.

🌿 This is one of the reasons I'm so passionate about Buteyko breathing.

The Buteyko Method encourages gentle, lighter breathing, comfortable nasal breathing and greater awareness of our everyday breathing habits.

These techniques may help us:

🌿 Recognise and reduce habitual overbreathing
🌿 Develop calmer, more regular breathing patterns
🌿 Support relaxation during stressful moments
🌿 Become more aware of the connection between breath and body
🌿 Build healthier breathing habits over time

As an airway-focused dentist and Buteyko breathing practitioner, I'm passionate about helping people understand that breathing is about so much more than simply getting air in and out.

It's connected to how we sleep, how we function and how we feel.

💚 This World Mental Health Day, I'd love to encourage you to do one small thing:

Take a moment to notice your breathing.

Is it fast or slow? Gentle or effortful? Through your nose or mouth?

No pressure to change anything. Just notice.

Because sometimes, awareness is where positive change begins.

✨ A calmer breath may be one small step towards a calmer mind.

Breathing exercises can support wellbeing alongside, not instead of, appropriate mental health care.

💬 I'd love to know: Have you ever noticed your breathing change when you're stressed?

What if the symptoms that seem completely unrelated… aren’t? 🌿

Mouth breathing. Snoring. Restless sleep. Teeth crowding. Grinding. Jaw tension. Feeding or swallowing difficulties. Posture concerns.

Individually, they can look like separate problems. But sometimes, when we look at how the tongue, lips, jaws, breathing and swallowing are functioning together, a bigger pattern begins to emerge.

That’s why I don’t just look at teeth and I don’t treat a list of symptoms.

I look at the whole body and the whole picture.

Because the question isn’t simply “What symptom do we need to fix?”

It’s “Why is this happening?” 🌱

And sometimes, understanding the why changes what we do next.

Save this if you’re starting to connect the dots or share it with a parent who might recognise a few of these signs. 🤍

That grinding sound coming from your child’s bedroom? 🦷🌙
I’m interested in more than their teeth.

Parents often mention grinding almost casually:

“Oh yes… they’ve always done that.”

But when I hear about regular nighttime grinding, my next questions are often about sleep.

Do they snore?
Sleep with their mouth open?
Toss and turn?
Wake with a dry mouth?
Have difficulty breathing comfortably through their nose?

Because children can grind their teeth for many different reasons and grinding alone does not mean there’s an airway problem.

But when it appears alongside other signs?

That’s when I start joining the dots. 👀

As an airway-focused dentist, I want to understand what’s happening while that child sleeps.

So if you hear grrrr coming from the bedroom tonight… 🫣

Don’t panic.
Just get curious.

Save this for tonight and send it to the parent who says, “Mine does this too!” 🤍

It’s World Smile Day 😁

As a dentist, this should probably be my easiest post of the year…

“Brush twice a day. Floss. Smile.”
Job done. 😂🪥

Except… I’m an airway-focused dentist, so obviously I’m going to make it about breathing, sleep and function too!

Because behind every smile there’s a tongue doing its thing 👅, a nose hopefully doing the breathing 👃, jaws chewing away 🍎 and, ideally, everyone getting some decent sleep. 💤

Teeth may be the stars of the show…
but there’s a whole backstage crew keeping that smile going!

Happy World Smile Day! 💛😁

Your child’s mouth can tell us far more than whether they have cavities. 🦷💤

The way a child breathes, sleeps, swallows and rests their tongue can give us important clues about how their oral function is developing.

Things I don’t simply brush off:

👅 A tongue that consistently rests low
👄 An open-mouth resting posture
😴 Regular snoring or restless sleep
🦷 Teeth grinding at night
💨 Mouth breathing
🥱 Waking tired despite a full night’s sleep
🦴 Changes in the way the jaws and bite are developing

One sign alone doesn’t give us a diagnosis. But when several pieces start appearing together, I want to understand why.

Because as an airway-focused dentist, I’m not only looking at teeth.

I’m looking at the child attached to them. 🤍

Save this for your next dental visit or send it to a parent who needs to know what to look out for.

If you’re noticing several of these signs in your own child, you can book a discovery call or comprehensive airway & myofunctional assessment via the link in my bio.

See the whole picture. Understand what matters. Know what to do next.

This one is from the heart. 🤍

My daughter is my reason. She is my why.

My journey into breathing, airway health and function began because I was once that parent searching for answers. Wanting to understand what was happening with my own child, wanting to know why, and wanting to know what I could do to help her.

That journey changed me, both as a mum and as a clinician.

Today, I’m incredibly proud to be a Certified Instructor in the Buteyko Breathing Method. 🫁✨ (Buteyko Clinic) But this is about so much more than another qualification.

This has become my life’s work: to keep learning, keep asking questions and help the parents who are standing where I once stood, looking at their child and knowing there must be more to the picture.

Everything started with her. And she will always be the reason I keep going. 🤍

For her. Because of her. And for every parent still searching for answers.
