Today is The Day Of Remembrance for the Victims of the Katyn massacre.
The Katyn massacre was a series of mass executions of 22 thousand Polish officers carried out by the Soviet NKVD in April and May 1940. Though the killings took place at several different locations, the massacre is named after the Katyn Forest, where some of the mass graves were first discovered.
The painting "Katyń" by Zdzisław Beksiński is one of the most famous depictions of the atrocity.
