Our recent team trip to Colchester Zoo gives us another excuse to talk about teeth! 🦒🦷

While we were feeding the giraffes, we got researching...

Did you know that giraffes don't actually have any upper front teeth? Instead, they have a tough dental pad which works with their lower teeth, lips and that famously long tongue to help them strip leaves from branches.

Also getting a giraffe into the Orthodontic chair would be quite the challenge! 🦒

🐘 We can't resist an orthodontic fact about elephants! 🐘

Here’s our very own Marijana making some new friends during our team trip to Colchester Zoo this summer.

Being an orthodontic practice, naturally we got thinking about teeth…

Did you know that elephants go through six sets of molars during their lifetime? As one set wears down, another gradually moves forward from the back of the jaw to replace it.

We humans aren't quite so lucky - we only get two sets of teeth, so looking after our adult teeth and keeping them healthy and well aligned really does matter.

What is the right age for orthodontics? 🦷

It’s a question we’re often asked by parents - and the answer is that there isn’t one perfect age for everyone.

For many children, orthodontic treatment begins once most of their adult teeth have come through, often around the ages of 11 to 14. But every smile develops differently, and in some cases it can be helpful to assess things a little earlier.

An early orthodontic assessment can identify how the teeth and jaws are developing and whether there are any problems with the bite or space for adult teeth. It doesn’t necessarily mean treatment needs to start straight away - sometimes the best approach is simply to keep an eye on things as your child grows.

And, of course, orthodontics isn’t just for children and teenagers. There’s no upper age limit for improving your smile, with plenty of discreet treatment options available for adults too. 😊

Most everyday foods are absolutely fine during Orthodontic treatment, but fixed braces do need a little consideration at lunchtime. 🎒🍌 🥪

Softer options such as sandwiches, wraps, pasta, yoghurt and softer fruits are generally easy to manage. Apples and other harder fruit can still be enjoyed too – simply cut them into smaller, bite-sized pieces rather than biting straight into them.

It’s best to avoid very hard, sticky or chewy foods that could damage brackets or wires, and keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum for the sake of the teeth underneath those braces too.

Starting the new school year with new braces? 🎒

The first few days back at school can take a little getting used to at the best of times - and having a new brace can add another change into the mix.

Teeth may feel a little tender after a brace is first fitted or adjusted, so softer foods can be helpful for a day or two. Keeping orthodontic wax handy can also help if a bracket is rubbing against the inside of the mouth.

Most importantly, don’t worry if everything feels a little unfamiliar at first. Eating, speaking and looking after your teeth with braces soon becomes part of the normal routine.

Back to school mornings are back… and so is the rush to get everyone out of the door on time! 🎒

Once the usual routine kicks back in, it’s a good time to make sure brushing gets enough time too – particularly for anyone wearing fixed braces.

Brushing around brackets and wires takes a little more care than usual, so try to allow around two minutes and pay particular attention to each bracket and along the gumline.

An interdental brush can also help reach between brackets and underneath wires, where an ordinary toothbrush might struggle.

It might mean getting up a couple of minutes earlier, but a good brushing routine morning and night can make a real difference to keeping teeth and gums healthy throughout orthodontic treatment.
