Nort Why Equine Dentistry? Who am I & What do I do?

Domestication of the horse has resulted in a change of diet from tough fibrous forage to soft pasture and concentrate feeds. In effect this has reduced jaw movements and resulted in sharp enamel edges which can cause oral discomfort. Throughout the horse's life their teeth are continually erupting thus reasoning for regular removal of sharp edges, which in most horses is annually. My name is Gemma

English an Equine Dental Technician who studied at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire and have since obtained a degree in Equine Dental Studies. It is of strong importance to me that all treatment takes place safely and is conducted in a calm and gentle manner, as horse's welfare is my number one priority. As part of my service there is no charge for oral examinations as I feel it is important for owners to have good awareness and understanding of their horse's oral health.

Tally having his teeth checked by Kieran from . During his routine dental check, Gemma English Equine Dental Services spotted that he may have a cavity in one of his molars, so Kieran came to see what could be done and confirmed that Tally needs to have a filling. Thankfully this got picked up before any more damage occurred, which is why we are so grateful to Gemma's skills and her routine visits and for Kieran's expertise.

Convenient for owners to believe all is well just because they look good especially the companion pony or retired horse that often gets overlooked.

All equines matter and deserve the basics in equine husbandry.

It’s important to remember horses, as prey animals, are naturally stoic. Even though poor dentition can lead to poor condition, horses can often mask any signs of dental discomfort and not show any symptoms.

This means a horse may appear to be in good condition and eat well yet still suffer from hidden dental issues. Regular dental appointments are crucial to ensure their comfort and to identify any problems early, preventing them from worsening into more serious issues.
