From brushing their first tooth to their first trip to the dentist, here are 🖐️ tips to help keep your kids' teeth decay-free.

1️⃣ Brush teeth twice daily for about 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Brush last thing at night before bed and on one other occasion.

2️⃣ Spit out after brushing and don't rinse – if you rinse, the fluoride won't work as well.

3️⃣ Guide your child's hand so they can feel the correct movement. You could use a mirror to help your child see exactly where the brush is cleaning their teeth.

4️⃣ Take your child to the dentist when their first milk teeth appear. This is so they become familiar with the environment and get to know the dentist.

5️⃣ Children aged 7 and over should be able to brush their own teeth, but it's still a good idea to watch them to make sure they brush properly. Under 7 and parents/carers should be completing the majority of the brushing.

Dental implants represent a common procedure of permanently replacing missing teeth without affecting neighbouring teeth.

Implants are used as artificial tooth roots to replace missing teeth without having to touch the surrounding teeth. They are placed in the bone and allowed to heal and then crowns or bridges are permanently fixed on the top. They can be used for any situation from a single tooth to a complete set of teeth.

We're very proud to use Enlighten Smiles teeth whitening technology here at Smile & Wellbeing Dental Studio.

The Enlighten system is a combination of both at home and in surgery whitening. We're regularly contacted by patients conscious of having bad breath. If you're experiencing this, here is some great advice from the Oral Health Foundation... 👇

👉 What causes bad breath?

Bad breath is a very common problem and there are many different causes. Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases released by the bacteria that coat your teeth, gums and tongue. Also, bits of food that get caught between the teeth and on the tongue, will rot and can sometimes cause an unpleasant smell. Strong foods like garlic, coffee and onions can add to the problem. So, it is very important to brush your teeth correctly and regularly. This will help keep your breath smelling fresh.

The bacteria on our teeth and gums (called ‘plaque') also cause gum disease and tooth decay. One of the warning signs of gum disease is that you always have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. Again, your dental team will be able to see and treat the problem during your regular check-ups. The earlier the problems are found, the more effective the treatment will be.

👉 What else causes bad breath?

Bad breath can also be caused by some medical problems. 'Dry mouth' (xerostomia) is a condition that means your mouth produces less saliva. This causes bacteria to build up in your mouth and this leads to bad breath. Dry mouth may be caused by some medicines, by salivary gland problems or by continually breathing through your mouth instead of your nose. Older people may produce less saliva, causing further problems.

If you suffer from dry mouth, your dental team may be able to recommend or prescribe an artificial saliva product. Or they may be able to suggest other ways of dealing with the problem.

👉 How can my dentist help?

If you do have bad breath, you will need to start a routine for keeping your mouth clean and fresh. Regular check-ups will allow your dentist to watch out for any places where plaque is caught between your teeth. Your dental team will be able to clean all those areas that are difficult to reach.

They will also be able to show you the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and show you any areas you may be missing, including your tongue.

Did you know that 17% of the UK population have such a bad fear of dentistry that they refuse to visit or get essential dental work done. That's more than one-in-six people potentially missing regular checkups and not getting necessary dental treatments when they need them the most.

In order to overcome this, many dental surgeries choice to sedate nervous patients - an easy option for the dentist. This is not only costly, but in our experience does not help the patient to ever become truly dentally fit.

We much prefer to help you overcome your fear by gradual and gentle introduction to treatment, step by step, enabling you to gain confidence and achieve a calm, fearless frame of mind.

Head Dentist Richard has been extremely successful with this approach in the past and many former nervous patients now visit us for regular preventive treatment, whilst also recommending us to their friends and family as well.

If you feel it'll help, you're also very welcome to bring your own music along, or we can provide over ear earphones and music to drown out any dental noise.

Our patient approach can help you overcome any fears of visiting the dentist. Contact our team to get booked in today:

Composite Bonding is a non-invasive procedure that’s pain free with no damage or changes to your natural teeth. It’s a non-permanent treatment that is completely reversible and is used to improve minor imperfections and create a more uniform and whiter smile. 😃

Before applying the composite material, we will clean and prepare the tooth’s outer surface. Preparation is done using an acidic gel which ensures the composite will properly adhere to your natural teeth.

You and your dentist will decide on the perfect colour for your composite to match your existing teeth before treatment begins. You may wish to whiten your natural teeth ahead of your bonding appointment to allow for a brighter and whiter smile. If this is the case, we can support that process too.

The composite is then applied to the tooth and the dentist will shape and sculpt to the desired look and it is then hardened with a blue light to set it in place firmly. The composite is polished and perfected, and your new smile is complete!
