After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste rather than rinsing your mouth immediately with water.

Rinsing straight away can wash away the concentrated fluoride left by your toothpaste, reducing its preventative effect. Leaving it on your teeth for longer helps fluoride continue doing its job.
