DENTAL MYTH BUSTER: “If an implant has peri-implantitis, it needs to be removed.” 🦷

❌ Not necessarily.

Peri-implantitis doesn’t automatically mean the implant has to be removed. I explain in this reel why…

The right approach depends on a number of factors, including the severity of the disease, supporting bone, implant stability and how the condition responds to treatment.

In some cases, the aim is to treat the infection, manage the inflammation and preserve the implant wherever possible.

🧠 10+ Years of Teaching. 📚 50+ Courses. 🎓 500+ Delegates.

Teaching has been part of my career in dentistry for over 26 years🎓🦷

My journey in education began at Liverpool University, where I started as a part-time lecturer, before continuing my teaching at Birmingham University.

Since 2003, I’ve focused much of my teaching on postgraduate education, sharing the clinical knowledge and experience I’ve gained throughout my career.

From computer-guided surgery and soft tissue surgery around dental implants, to the management of peri-implantitis, teaching has allowed me to share practical techniques and approaches that can be applied directly in clinical practice.

For me, education has always been about more than simply passing on knowledge. It’s about continuing to learn, sharing experiences and helping other clinicians develop the confidence and skills to provide the best possible care for their patients.

This has been a huge part of my journey and ultimately led to the development of BPI Education.

Can receding gums grow back? 🤔

In some cases, with BPI they can… 👀

Receding gums can affect more than just the appearance of your smile - they can also impact the long-term health and stability of your teeth.

You may notice:
🧊 Increased tooth sensitivity
🪥 Discomfort when brushing
🦷 Exposed tooth roots
😬 Teeth appearing longer

This patient came to BPI Dental with significant gum recession following orthodontic treatment, combined with traumatic tooth brushing. 🪥

Following a detailed assessment with myself, it was clear that the existing gum tissue was too thin and unstable to adequately protect the teeth.

Treatment included:
✨ A gingival graft using tissue from the palate
✨ Increasing the amount of healthy gum tissue
✨ Covering the exposed root surfaces
✨ Creating a more stable and protective gum line

The outcome? Significant root coverage, healthier and stronger gum tissue, improved aesthetics and long-term stability - helping to protect the teeth and reduce the risk of further recession. ✨

Most importantly... a healthier smile and a very happy patient! 😄🤍

Why should you join my Peri-Implantitis Management Course?🦷

We asked previous delegate Dr Dhru Shah why he decided to join my course and, importantly, how he found the hands-on experience.

For clinicians managing implant cases, peri-implantitis can be challenging - from knowing how to diagnose to the case treatment plan, to deciding whether an implant can be saved or extracted.

That’s why I designed this course to go beyond the theory🎓

Our 2-day Peri-Implantitis Management Course combines clinical teaching with hands-on training, giving delegates the opportunity to practise techniques and develop practical skills they can take straight back into practice.

The answer... I chose to save the implant🦷

This case was actually referred to me for implant removal.

At first glance, it’s easy to see why:

📍 50% bone loss
📍 8mm circumferential pocketing

However, after carrying out a thorough assessment, I believed the implant still had the potential to be saved.

Treatment planning isn’t just about looking at the amount of bone loss. It’s about understanding the cause of the disease, assessing implant stability, considering the patient’s overall situation, and deciding whether the implant has a realistic chance of long-term success.

Rather than removing the implant, I carried out peri-implantitis surgery with the aim of eliminating the infection, regenerating the supporting tissues where possible, and giving the implant the best opportunity to remain functional.

➡️ Watch to see my process & the outcome.

Over 26 years ago, I didn’t just want to open another dental practice - I wanted to create something different✨

My vision was to build a specialist practice where patients could receive exceptional care under one roof, where collaboration between clinicians came first, and where education and continuous learning would always be at the heart of what we do🦷

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far BPI Dental has come and grateful to every patient, colleague, referrer and delegate who has been part of the journey🤍

This is just the first chapter of the story... 📖
