Using a Mylar strip to create a beautifully smooth emergency profile for composite veneers is an excellent way to avoid ledges and prevent marginal staining

Quick one from the car! Free Webinar ⬇️

I’ve put a poll up in my stories about a free webinar on canine risers.

If you vote on the poll, I’ll send you the link to access it. It’s a 30-minute lecture taken straight from the online theory section of our 2-day anterior composite course.

You’ll also get access to the online platform to watch it.

If it’s useful and you want to go further, there are still a few spots left on our 15–16th May course at the Grand Central, Belfast.

If not, no problem at all just take the lecture, apply it, and hopefully it improves your day-to-day dentistry.

Hopefully a win either way 👍

Who are our courses for?

The course actually came into existence because young dentists started reaching out to me for help and advice with anterior composites. That originally became the Confidence with Composites course and over time it has evolved into the COMP 1 course we run today, refined and tweaked with every cohort to pack in as much practical value as possible for the delegates who attend.

I was speaking to a young dentist recently who was interested in the course but worried it might be “too advanced” for her. I reassured her that this is exactly why we keep our groups small and hands on. I tailor the teaching to the people in the room, so whether you are just starting out or looking to level up, you will be supported at the right pace for you.

Our anterior composite courses are built for dentists at every stage of their career 👇

• Newly qualified or early career dentists who want to feel confident with
Class 3 and Class 5 restorations, cervical fillings and replacing old anterior composite

• Dentists a few years into practice who want to step up into
edge bonding, post orthodontic finishing, tooth wear repair, black triangle closure, peg laterals and simple to advanced composite veneers

• More experienced clinicians who want a refresh on
modern materials, contemporary techniques and the latest instrument systems so they can offer the most up to date solutions to their patients

Reshaping a tooth in Photoshop using Warp

A simple workflow I use for patient education, lab communication and treatment planning.

Select the Magnetic Lasso Tool.
Trace around the tooth you want to adjust.

Go to Edit → Copy.

Go to Edit → Paste.
This creates a new layer with just that tooth.

Select the new tooth layer.

Go to Edit → Transform → Warp.

Gently push and pull the grid to refine incisal length, contour, symmetry or close black triangles.

Press Enter to apply.

Keep movements subtle for realistic results.

This is a powerful way to show patients what’s possible, give labs a clearer visual brief, and plan aesthetics before you ever pick up a handpiece.

I used to find attachment removal incredibly stressful.

So many patients came in with old ortho resin from previous braces still stuck to their teeth years later, and I was terrified of damaging enamel.

In the early days I avoided using a bur completely. I’d spend forever with Sof-Lex discs and a scalpel blade, slowly polishing away and feeling like it took an eternity.

Now I follow the exact approach you see in the video. I use a red, fine tapered flame diamond dry (with the odd air blast) and work carefully to avoid contacting enamel.
Once the bulk is gone, I switch to an Enhance wheel from Dentsply to gently erase that final thin layer. It abrades composite beautifully without harming tooth structure.

If you’re still nervous, try lightly etching so enamel goes chalky – it gives great visual contrast. A UV torch works too.

Honestly, doing this dry has been a game-changer for me.
Plenty of clinicians have their own favourite tools and workflows, but I’m sharing mine in case it helps anyone who’s been struggling the same way I did.

Before your child’s treatment appointment, here are the key things you should avoid

1️⃣ Don’t switch the usual caregiver for the treatment visit.
If one parent or guardian normally brings them to check-ups, try to keep that consistent. A sudden change in routine can make them feel something is wrong and increase anxiety.

2️⃣ Don’t over-comfort.
Avoid lifting them, clinging to them or acting differently from a normal check-up. Children notice this instantly and may assume the appointment will be difficult.

3️⃣ Don’t bribe them beforehand.
Promises of toys, treats or days out shift their focus to the reward rather than staying calm. If the appointment doesn’t go perfectly, missing out on the reward can create extra upset.

4️⃣ Don’t make anxious or “jokey” comments.
Even throwaway lines about needles, drills or your own dental fears can plant unnecessary worry.

5️⃣ Don’t over-check on them during treatment.
Repeatedly asking if they’re OK or squeezing their hand or foot can make them think they shouldn’t be OK. It also distracts the dentist during a delicate procedure.

Keep things calm, consistent and predictable.
Your child takes their cues from you.

Follow for more honest and simple dental advice!

Are some judging young dentists too quickly when they show an interest in restorative and aesthetic dentistry?

From what I see, most of them aren’t trying to skip steps, they’re trying to learn.

They’re investing early, asking questions, and wanting to do things safely and properly. Propelled by the exceptional work they are seeing on social media platforms from colleagues and peers!

Instead of criticising that, maybe we should be guiding it.
Early education isn’t the problem if giving the correct guidance and support!
