If you frequently experience a sore, swollen gum around a wisdom tooth, you may be suffering from pericoronitis.

Pericoronitis is an inflammation or infection of the gum tissue that covers part of a partially erupted wisdom tooth. Food debris and bacteria can become trapped beneath this flap of gum, leading to repeated episodes of pain, swelling and difficulty chewing.

For suitable cases, there is another option besides simply waiting for it to flare up again.
