With sports season in full swing, do not forget to protect those smiles 😁⚽

From football and rugby to cricket, cycling and summer clubs, this time of year keeps lots of children and adults active and on the go β˜€οΈπŸ

Accidents can happen during sport, which is why wearing a mouthguard during contact sports is so important. A custom fitted mouthguard can help protect teeth, gums and jaws from injury and give extra peace of mind while playing 🦷✨

If you would like to find out more about mouthguards or book a check up before the summer holidays, give our friendly team a call today 😊

Picnic season is officially here β˜€οΈπŸ§Ί

If you are planning family picnics, days at the park or summer outings, here are some tooth friendly snack ideas that your smile will thank you for 😁

πŸ§€ Cheese cubes
πŸ“ Strawberries and blueberries
πŸ₯• Carrot and cucumber sticks
πŸ₯œ Nuts
🍎 Apple slices enjoyed with mealtimes
πŸ’§ Plenty of water instead of fizzy drinks

Try to avoid grazing on sugary snacks throughout the day as frequent snacking can increase the risk of tooth decay. It is always better to enjoy sweeter treats at mealtimes where possible πŸͺ₯✨

Strawberry season is one of our favourite times of year πŸ“β˜€οΈ

Strawberries are a lovely sweet treat, but did you know it is better for your teeth to enjoy them with your meals rather than snacking on them throughout the day? 😁

Every time we eat sugary foods, even natural sugars found in fruit, our teeth come under acid attack. Having sweet treats at meal times instead of grazing between meals can help protect your smile πŸͺ₯✨

Enjoy the strawberries, Wimbledon and sunshine this June and do not forget to keep on top of your dental check ups too β˜€οΈ

With the beautiful warm weather we’ve been enjoying lately β˜€οΈ it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated β€” and your oral health benefits more than you might think πŸ’§πŸ¦·

Drinking plenty of water plays a huge role in keeping your mouth healthy and your smile protected.

Here’s why πŸ‘‡

πŸ’§ Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria throughout the day, reducing the build up of plaque that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

πŸ’§ Staying hydrated helps your body produce saliva β€” something many people don’t realise is essential for good oral health. Saliva helps neutralise harmful acids in the mouth and naturally protects your teeth.

πŸ’§ A dry mouth can increase the risk of:
β€’ Cavities
β€’ Bad breath
β€’ Gum irritation
β€’ Tooth sensitivity

This is especially common during hot weather when we lose more fluids through sweating.

πŸ’§ Choosing water over sugary or fizzy drinks also helps reduce acid attacks on your teeth, helping to protect enamel and keep your smile stronger for longer.

So whether you’re out enjoying the sunshine in Ampthill β˜€οΈ spending time with family, gardening, walking the dog or enjoying a picnic in the park β€” don’t forget to keep that water bottle nearby 😊

A healthy smile starts with healthy habits πŸ’™

What fizzy drinks really do to enamel πŸ₯€πŸ¦·

Fizzy drinks might be refreshing, but they can be very harsh on your teeth.

These drinks are highly acidic and can slowly wear away your enamel, which is the protective outer layer of your teeth. Once enamel is worn down it does not grow back. This can lead to sensitivity, discolouration and a higher risk of decay.

They are also often high in sugar. Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth which then produce acids that attack your teeth and increase the risk of cavities.

Even sugar free fizzy drinks can still cause damage because of the acid they contain.

If you do enjoy fizzy drinks, try to have them with meals, use a straw where possible and avoid brushing your teeth straight after as the enamel will be softer.

Small habits can make a big difference to protecting your smile 😊

Call us today to book your check up and keep your enamel strong and healthy.

Why do we recommend an electric toothbrush over a manual one? πŸͺ₯✨

An electric toothbrush does much of the hard work for you and helps to give a more consistent clean across all areas of your mouth. The small rotating head can reach areas that are often missed with a manual toothbrush, especially around the gum line and back teeth.

We specifically recommend Oral B electric toothbrushes with a round head. This design helps to clean each tooth individually and more effectively.

It is important to choose a brush that has a built in timer and a pressure sensor. The timer makes sure you brush for the full two minutes and the pressure sensor helps prevent you from brushing too hard and damaging your gums.

It does not need to be an expensive model. As long as it has these key features, it will help you maintain a great standard of oral hygiene at home 😊

Call us today to book your check up and get more personalised advice from our friendly team.

How often do you change your toothbrush? πŸ€”πŸͺ₯

If you cannot remember, it is probably time for a new one πŸ˜„

We recommend changing your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles start to splay. Worn bristles do not clean your teeth properly and can be less effective at removing plaque.

It is also important to change your toothbrush after being unwell to help prevent bacteria lingering around.

A fresh toothbrush is a simple step that makes a big difference to your oral health and helps keep your smile clean and healthy ✨

Call us today to book your check up and make sure your smile is on the right track.

When should children first see the dentist? πŸ‘ΆπŸ¦·

We recommend bringing your little one to see us from around 6 months old. This is when their first tooth usually starts to appear and it is a lovely time to gently introduce them to our practice.

These early visits are all about helping children feel comfortable with the sights, sounds and friendly faces they will see each time they come in. Getting used to the environment from a young age can really help prevent anxiety as they grow older 😊

Appointments at this age are calm, positive and reassuring. We simply check that their teeth are developing well and help you with advice on how to care for their new smile at home.

Starting young builds confidence and sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles for your child.

Call us today to book your child’s first visit with our friendly team.
