20/08/2021

King Street Dental are open and back to booking routine examinations along with treatment. However please bear with us as we are still making our way through the list of patients we had to cancel last year due to the pandemic.

As you can appreciate we have a considerable backlog of patients to get back in touch with but if you have not heard from us, please call our Reception on 01224 640759 and we can get an appointment arranged.
You can also email us on [email protected]

As we are still adhering to social distancing we are asking for patients to arrive at the exact time of your appointment. Please do not arrive early so we can minimize patients over lapping and the number of patients within the practice at one time.

The outside door to the building will be open however the inside main door will be locked. Please knock once at your appointment time and wait for a member of staff to let you enter. If you are able to wear a face mask please wear one.

You will be asked to sanitize your hands before entry and a member of staff will run through the visitor screening questions checking your covid status.

Thank you for your ongoing patience during these challenging times. We look forward to seeing you all again :)

Practice Update

Up until now we've had to restrict our service for NHS patients but from 1st November 2020 we will be able to see NHS patients for routine checkups and treatment. Due to the current guidelines for COVID we will still be running a reduced service. If you missed an appointment during lockdown, you can now call the practice to arrange to be seen. As you can imagine there is a huge backlog of people to see so it's likely waiting times for appointments may be quite long initially.

On a personal note I've decided that I will be retiring from the practice at the end of October. Over the years I've enjoyed the great privilege of caring for so many patients and I'm grateful for the trust you've had in me. I'd like to say a huge thank you to the practice staff, past and present that have worked along side of me for the past 35 years. They deserve great credit in what we have achieved. I'm also proud of the many dentists we have helped train and mentor within the practice too.

I'm very pleased to be leaving the practice in the very capable hands of Gavin Balfour who has worked with me for the past 17 years. I know he will continue to provide excellent dental care for you and your family.

All the best
Stephen Rafferty

Practice re-opening

The Scottish Government has advised that dental practices can re-open from Monday 22d June. It’s important to note that there will still be strict restrictions on the number of patients we can see and the type of treatment we can carry out. We will be carrying out staff training and ensuring the practice is set up for a safe return for face to face treatment over the next week.

In this first phase we will be opening for emergency treatments only from Monday 29th June. Following the advice from the Chief Dental Officer:

• We will only be seeing patients with a dental emergency

• We are limited to seeing 10 patients a day

• Patients will only be able to make an appointment after speaking to a dentist to assess their needs

• We are unable to carry out aerosol generating procedures, such as fillings, root canal treatment etc. If these are necessary we can refer you to the Emergency Dental Hub

• Appointments can only be made by phone or email

• Only patients with appointments will be able to enter the practice. Please don’t turn up at the practice without an appointment.

• If you have Covid symptoms, a recent positive test or are awaiting test results, we can arrange for you to be seen elsewhere if necessary

If you have contacted us with a dental problem during lockdown, we will be in touch shortly to see if can help further.
We’d like to thank all of our patients for their great understanding of the situation we found ourselves in over the past weeks. It’s been a very frustrating time for us not to be able to help you as well as we would like to. Hopefully this is the first step of a quick return to something approaching normal service. We hope you can bear with us further as we work through this. Your safety and that of our staff are first and foremost in our mind as we get back to work.

Dental Emergencies.

There’s a lot of conditions that don’t require urgent attention. Here’s a list of common problems we see and what you can do to help.

Toothache
Regular painkillers if you need them. Good oral hygiene with a fluoride toothpaste and reducing your intake of sugary foods will help ensure any decay won’t get worse
Bleeding after extractions
Apply pressure to the socket. Bite on a clean handkerchief or cloth – not tissue paper, for 30 minutes. If this doesn’t work call the practice.
Pink saliva and a little bit of oozing from the socket is normal. Avoid hot drinks and alcohol. Don’t rinse your mouth for 24 hours.

Bleeding gums
These will improve if can clean your teeth and gums effectively. Brush for 2 minutes especially at the gum line and don’t forget to clean between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes. Corosdyl mouthwash may help but prolonged use can cause staining.

Dentures rubbing or loose
Use of a denture adhesive, like Fixodent or Polygrip may help. Seabond denture pads may make the denture more comfortable and stable. If there is a sharp edge an emery board can be used to smooth down.
Lost crown or veneer
Toofypegs can be used to restick lost crowns or veneers at home. Good oral hygiene will help stop the tooth becoming decayed

Ulcers
Bonjela on the area that is painful before meals in particular.
Take painkillers if necessary
Rinse with saltwater to prevent infection
Use difflam mouthwash which you can get from the pharmacist.

Sensitive teeth
Teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold foods/drinks due to receding gums, large fillings or decay. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help apply to the teeth and leave overnight after brushing. Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks which may make things worse.

Lost filling/broken tooth
Emergency dental kits can be bought at the pharmacists to patch up tooth at home. Take painkillers if required. Again good oral hygiene and low sugar intake will help.

Painkillers
Adults (Over 16)
Paracetamol 1g (2x 500mg) 4 times daily
Ibuprofen 400mg 3 times daily (there has been some research that ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided with corona virus, so if you suspect you may have been exposed done’t take it)
NB Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be alternated for maximum pain effectiveness
Co-codamol 8/500 4 times daily – not with paracetamol or ibuprofen

Child doses – follow the advice on the pack. If you are unsure what you ca take, check with your pharmacist

Corona Virus update

23/03/2020

Yet again we are having to deal with a rapidly changing landscape due to the corona virus. We have had further advice from the Chief Dental Officer taking into account the government stressing the need for social distancing. It is clear that normal dental treatment is on hold for the time being.

With effect of today we are moving to an emergency service only. If you have a routine appointment for any treatment this is now cancelled and we will be in touch to discuss reorganising your care.

Treatment for dental emergencies will be by appointment only. You will not be able to enter the practice unless you have arranged an appointment by phone first of all. All calls will be triaged and we will be seeing acute emergencies only for those not showing signs or symptoms of Covid-19. Our aim is to help in social distancing as much as possible. We are going to be very limited in treatment that we can carry out and we ask for your understanding in unprecedented circumstances. This is to protect you and the dental team.

If you are showing symptoms of Covid-19 call the practice or NHS 24 on 111 and treatment can be arranged for urgent cases.

Everyday we seem to be dealing with new problems and restrictions. It’s challenging for us all. We very much look forward to getting back to some semblance of normality, but until then we will do our best to support you and the broader community by following the advice we receive.

Corona Virus Update

18/03/2020

Following on from yesterdays post, we have now received guidance from the Chief Dental Officer of Scotland as to what dental practices should be doing during the current outbreak.

With effect immediately we should avoid all aerosol generating procedures . These would include scales and cleaning using the ultrasonic scaler, although cleaning with hand instruments is still permitted.

Almost all fillings can no longer be carried out. The same would apply to root canal treatment and crowns and bridges.

Examinations, extractions and denture work can still take place.

If there is an acute emergency we can carry out an aerosol generating procedure under strict conditions to protect staff and patients.

Patients who are showing symptoms of the virus should phone 111 and there are plans for them to be seen by the Public Dental Service.

At the moment the practice is still open although at a reduced capacity and we will contact you if we have to postpone or rearrange your treatment. We will be happy to discuss any concerns surrounding this with you. If you are having any pain or have an urgent dental problem, please still contact the practice and we will do our best to help you.

Keep checking back for any updates. We look forward to getting back to a full service as soon as possible.

Corona virus Update.
17/03/2020
Due to the developing situation with the corona virus we have been reviewing our practice and how we can protect patients and our staff during this period.
As a dental practice we already take infection control very seriously and we have good procedures in place to prevent transmission of infections. However there are additional measures we have put in place and will continue to put in place as we receive new guidance.
At the moment we are still trying to operate as normally as possible but there may be some procedures that we will delay if there is not an urgent need.
If you have a raised temperature or a persistent cough, you should not attend the practice. Please phone or email to cancel. This also applies if you have had contact with someone infected with the virus in the last 2 weeks. If you are in pain or have another emergency we will try to arrange treatment at a designated location.
If you are at higher risk of developing complications through infection we suggest delaying your appointment. Contact reception to arrange this.
High risk groups include:
• aged 70 or older (regardless of medical conditions)
• under 70 with an underlying health condition listed below (ie anyone instructed to get a flu jab as an adult each year on medical grounds):
• chronic (long-term) respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or bronchitis
• chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
• chronic kidney disease
• chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis
• chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), a learning disability or cerebral palsy
• diabetes
• problems with your spleen – for example, sickle cell disease or if you have had your spleen removed
• a weakened immune system as the result of conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or medicines such as steroid tablets or chemotherapy
• being seriously overweight (a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above)
• those who are pregnant

Friday 21st September 2018 is Jeans for Genes Day! But what is Jeans for Genes Day? Life-altering Genetic Disorders affect around half a million children in the UK. Jeans for Genes Day is a fundraising day for children with genetic conditions in the UK.

On Jeans for Genes day, participating schools and workplaces allow students and staff to wear jeans and casual wear to school and work instead of their usual uniforms and formal work wear. They participate in fundraising by raising money in return for wearing casual wear and by holding events to raise money.
