Microscopes in Endodontics

* The operating microscope greatly enhances a clinician's ability to view the tiniest details inside a patient's tooth. By magnifying vision up to 25 times that of the naked eye, the dental microscope is useful in both diagnosis and treatment. Research demonstrates better outcomes compared to treatment without vision enhancement or magnification. Microscopes aid in:

1. Finding hidden and accessory canals
2. Locating and removing separated instruments
3. Preserving more tooth structure
4. Improving ergonomics for the clinician

What Causes Early Childhood Caries?

* Bacteria

The risk of developing ECC starts with the introduction of decay-causing bacteria into a baby’s mouth. This can happen anytime a baby comes in contact with someone else’s saliva, for example, through kissing on the lips or sharing a spoon.

* Sugary drinks and snacks
What your child eats or drinks can set off tooth decay. Drinks like juice, formula, soft drinks, and even milk can trigger the bacteria in the mouth to produce acid. Crackers, cereal, and other starchy or sweet food can increase the risk of tooth decay, too.

What Can You Do?
There are some steps you can take to lower your child’s risk of tooth decay:

▪use fluoridated water, which helps harden the outside of teeth and protects them from decay, in your child’s bottle or sippy cup;
▪limit sugary snacks and drinks like crackers and juices;
▪do not give a bottle or sippy cup to your child when he or she is going to bed or taking a nap;
▪take your baby to the dentist by his or her first birthday so the dentist can check your baby’s oral health and give you tips on caring for your baby’s mouth;
▪start brushing as soon as that first tooth comes in.
▪as soon as 2 teeth come in next to each other, start cleaning between the teeth 1 time per day. Talk to your dentist or dental hygienist about how to do this.

People Who Are at Higher Risk for COVID-19?

*** COVID-19: Is a new disease and there is limited information regarding risk factors for severe disease.
*** Based on currently available information and clinical expertise, older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

> Based on what we know now, those at high-risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are:

* People 65 years and older
* People who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility

> People of all ages with underlying medical conditions, particularly if not well controlled, including:

* People with chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma
* People who have serious heart conditions
* People who are immunocompromised
> Many conditions can cause a person to be immunocompromised, including cancer treatment, smoking, bone marrow or organ transplantation, immune deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, and prolonged use of corticosteroids and other immune weakening medications

* People with severe obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 40 or higher)
* People with diabetes
* People with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis
* People with liver disease

Cleaning and hygiene tips to protect against COVID-19

Everyone can help build a COVID-19 Safe Ethiopia as restrictions ease. Everyone must continue to practice good hygiene at all times to prevent the virus spreading.

1. Wash your hands often with soap and water. This includes before and after eating and after going to the toilet.

2. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when you can’t use soap and water.

3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

4. Clean and disinfect surfaces you use often such as bench tops, desks and doorknobs.

5. Clean and disinfect objects you use often such as mobile phones, keys, wallets and work passes.

6. Use tap and go instead of cash where possible.

7. Increase the amount of fresh air by opening windows or changing air conditioning.

***There is no evidence that alcohol-free hand rubs are effective against viruses like COVID-19. Experts recommend you don’t use them.

When Should Kids Start Brushing Their Teeth?

****Good dental care begins before a baby's first tooth appears. Just because you can't see the teeth doesn't mean they aren't there. Teeth actually begin to form in the second trimester of pregnancy. At birth, your baby has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw.

Here's when and how to care for those little choppers:

1. Even before your baby starts teething, run a clean, damp washcloth over the gums to clear away harmful bacteria.

2. When your baby gets teeth, brush them with an infant toothbrush. Use water and a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).

3. When two of your baby's teeth touch, you can begin flossing between them.

4. Around age 2, your child should learn to spit while brushing. Avoid giving your child water to swish and spit because this can make swallowing toothpaste more likely.

5. Kids ages 3 and up should use only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

6. Always supervise kids younger than 8 while brushing, as they're likely to swallow toothpaste

Healthy Nutrition for Healthy Teeth!!!

Eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods from all the food groups promotes healthy teeth and gums. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, protein foods, calcium-rich foods and whole grains provides essential nutrients for optimum oral health as well as overall health.

Foods for Optimum Oral Health

1. Calcium-rich foods, such as low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt and cheese, fortified soy drinks and tofu, canned salmon, almonds and dark green leafy vegetables help promote strong teeth and bones.

2. Phosphorus, found in eggs, fish, lean meat, dairy, nuts and beans is good for strong teeth.

3. Vitamin C promotes gum health, so eat plenty of citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, potatoes and spinach.

Why Do Teeth Become Overcrowded?

Teeth become overcrowded for a variety of reasons. Sometimes this occurs when the jaw is underdeveloped; as teeth grow in, they literally run out of space.

Other times, overcrowding occurs because the teeth and gums are growing at different rates. Tongue thrusts, lack of orthodontic care and even genetics can all contribute to overcrowding.

This problem may become noticeable when the molars come in, or may not become an issue until much later in adulthood

Pregnancy is a beautiful time, and naturally, you’ll do everything to ensure a healthy 9 months. This includes getting proper prenatal care, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, and even giving up a few habits.

Can good oral hygiene prevent COVID-19?

While we are still learning more about COVID-19 and its spread, there is currently no evidence to suggest that COVID-19 can be prevented by engaging in good oral hygiene. However, we do know that practicing good oral hygiene can reduce dental diseases like cavities and periodontal disease and maintaining good oral health positively impacts your overall health.

It’s important to note that respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 initiate and spread in the nasal cavity and the oral cavity and throat. Touching one’s eye can also be a source of transmission. Practicing good oral hygiene will have no effect on transmission to these locations.

The CDC has a number of recommendations about how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19, however the recommendations don’t include oral hygiene practices as a protective measure. If you and your family are staying home to help prevent the spread, in addition to the recommended CDC measures, take the opportunity to showcase and encourage good oral care habits for your kids!!!
