Researchers in Japan have taken a big step toward making tooth regeneration a reality. They’re testing a new medication that could help adults grow real teeth — not implants, but natural replacements.

The treatment works by blocking a protein called USAG-1, which normally prevents extra teeth from forming. In animal studies, stopping this protein allowed new teeth to grow — even in adults. Now, a clinical trial is underway in humans. It started in September 2024 and includes 30 men who are each missing at least one tooth. They're being given a special antibody that targets USAG-1 through a simple IV injection.

If successful, this could change dentistry forever — especially for people born without certain teeth or those who’ve lost them. Regrowing natural teeth could become a real option by 2030.
