Inlays & Onlays vs. Large Composite Fillings ✨

When restoring large cavities, the material you choose matters - especially when it comes to polymerization shrinkage.

🦷 Large Composite Fillings
Composite resin shrinks as it polymerizes (hardens under curing light). In small restorations, this isn’t a big issue. But in large cavities, shrinkage can lead to:
▪️ Marginal gaps
▪️ Post-operative sensitivity
▪️ Microleakage
▪️ Secondary caries
▪️ Cuspal stress or cracks

🦷 Inlays & Onlays (Indirect Restorations)
Fabricated outside the mouth (lab or CAD/CAM) and then bonded into place. Since most polymerization (composite inlays/onlays) happens before cementation, shrinkage stress inside the tooth is significantly reduced. In case of ceramic or gold inlays/onlays thanks to precision of manufacture shrinkage virtually does not exist.
