What is Conscious Sedation?

It helps you feel calm, relaxed and at ease during dental procedures. It’s a moderate level of sedation, so you’re still technically awake but feeling very carefree. It’s sometimes called “twilight sleep” because it creates a state of short-term amnesia (forgetfulness) where you experience insensitivity to pain without the loss of consciousness.

We understand that dental procedures can sometimes be accompanied by anxiety and discomfort. That's why we offer conscious sedation, a gentle approach to help you relax and manage any pain during your dental treatment.

Feel free to reach out to us to learn more about how conscious sedation can benefit you.

🧠 Did you know...
that your oral health could impact your brain health?

A recent study published in Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, suggests a connection. The study revealed that gum disease and tooth loss were associated with brain shrinkage in the hippocampus, a region linked to memory and Alzheimer's disease.

While the study doesn't establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, it underscores the importance of dental care. Dr. Satoshi Yamaguchi, PhD, DDS, from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, explains, 'Tooth loss and gum disease may play a role in brain health. Taking care of your teeth is more than just a smile, it's an investment in your mind.'

Involving 172 participants with an average age of 67, the study tracked dental health, memory tests, and brain scans over four years. Researchers found that the number of teeth and gum disease correlated with changes in the left hippocampus.

Healthy gums and teeth can contribute to more than just your smile – they could support your cognitive well-being too.

Let's continue to prioritise holistic health by nurturing our oral health. 🦷💭 "

A study from the University of Birmingham has found that 47.2% of people over 30 years of age present some form of periodontal disease, and this number shoots up to 70.1% for those 65 and older. Consequently, periodontal disease is linked to the development of a range of serious health issues including mental health conditions, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, and cardiometabolic disease. Why?

Dr. Joht Singh Chandan, the study’s co-first author, explains: “When oral ill-health progresses, it can lead to a substantially reduced quality of life. However, until now, not much has been known about the association of poor oral health and many chronic diseases, particularly mental ill-health.”

The study shows that anxiety and depression developed in 37% of those with gum disease. Dr. Devan Raindi, co-study author and periodontal specialist, suggests that “It could be postulated that the consequences of periodontitis, which included halitosis, drifting of teeth, mobility of teeth, and ultimately tooth loss, would have a psychosocial impact on an individual. This can lead to loss of confidence, ability to socialize, as well as functional issues.”

When was your last encounter with a fresh toothbrush? 🤔

We understand that getting accustomed to a new toothbrush might not be the most delightful experience. However, relying on the same toothbrush for an extended period isn't exactly pleasant either – the accumulation of toothpaste, food particles, and bacteria could potentially outweigh the benefits when brushing time arrives.

When it comes to healthy toothbrush maintenance this is what you should keep in mind and in your mouth:

🪥 Bristles Matter: Choose gentleness. Opt for a toothbrush with soft bristles to ensure a comfortable yet effective clean.

🪥 Aftercare Ritual: After each brushing session, rinse your toothbrush thoroughly with hot water. This simple step washes away residue, setting the stage for a fresh start.

🪥 Upright Elegance: Let your toothbrush breathe. Air dry it in an upright position to prevent moisture buildup and promote a hygienic environment.

🪥 No More Covers: Embrace openness. Discard toothbrush covers, allowing your brush to air dry freely and avoid creating a cozy breeding ground for unwelcome guests.

🪥 Sole Mate: Your toothbrush is a personal tool. Avoid sharing it with others to maintain individual oral hygiene and well-being.

🪥 Hygiene Haven: Create a safe distance. Keep your toothbrush away from the sink faucet and toilet to ensure it remains a sanctuary for your oral health.

🪥 Renewal Routine: Regularly update your toothbrush. Aim to replace it every 2-3 months, or if you've been under the weather. Prioritise your health and keep your smile shining bright.

At Muaks, our commitment extends beyond dental care; it encompasses the little details that enhance your journey to a healthier, happier smile. Your toothbrush is your daily companion – treat it with the care it deserves.
