🦷 Could teeth one day restore their own enamel — without the traditional dental drill?
What once sounded like science fiction is gradually becoming the subject of serious scientific research.
Scientists have developed a special biomimetic protein-based material designed to help trigger the restoration of damaged tooth enamel.
How does it work?
The material creates a kind of “framework” on the tooth surface where new mineral structures can begin to form. This process uses calcium and phosphate present in saliva. As a result, researchers were able to obtain a mineralized layer with a structure similar to natural enamel.
It sounds impressive. But does this mean we can throw away dental drills? Not yet. 🙂
The technology is still at the research stage and requires further clinical testing. It is particularly interesting for restoring demineralized and eroded enamel, while an already developed deep cavity is a completely different situation.
That is why modern dentistry is increasingly focused not only on treatment, but also on preserving as much of the patient’s natural tooth structure as possible.
While the technologies of the future continue to be tested, the best way to avoid serious dental treatment remains the same: prevention, professional dental hygiene, and early diagnosis.
