Complex lacerations of the ear almost always involve cartilage exposure. Ideally, ear lacerations should be repaired at the time of presentation, no more than 24 hours after the injury had occurred. If the auricular cartilage is exposed, the ear must be repaired to reduce the risk of complications such as infection, chondritis, necrosis, or deformities such as “cauliflower ear.” The key tenets of repairing a complex ear laceration are properly aligning the cartilage to maintain aesthetics and making sure that overlying skin can adequately cover the cartilage. The cartilage itself is avascular and relies on coverage by the skin to receive its blood supply. Once the laceration has been repaired, it is important to apply a pressure dressing to the ear to prevent hematoma formation.

A ranula is a saliva-filled cyst that forms in the floor of the mouth under your tongue. It results from a damaged salivary gland where it instead of saliva draining from the gland into your mouth, it leaks into the nearby tissues, forming a cyst or “bubble.” It’s initially treated by marsupialization where deroofing of the cyst takes place through an incision allowing drainage of its contents. The cyst edges are then sutured to the adjacent tissues for continuous drainage until healing occurs.

Soft-tissue fibromyxomas, in particular, those of the
mandibular gingiva are poorly described in the literature.
