What do dental lab technicians do?
A dental technician is a great job to have. You will work with a wide variety of patients, including both adults and children, to provide a wide range of services for the group of dentists that you are working with. There are many benefits to working in this field, but you do need to have some professional training before you can join this industry.
Your Job Duties
As a dental technician, you will work in a laboratory setting creating prosthetic pieces for patients. For example, you may make dentures, bridges and other mouthpieces that are made to fit each individual patient perfectly. This job requires a lot of skill and attention to detail, so your training is very important for satisfied patients. There are several different people who work to fill the prescription for the mouthpiece. The dental technician, however, is the person who initially receives the prescription. You are the person in charge of creating the mold for their piece, using either a traditional mold or new technology that sends a digital image of the person's mouth. Technology is advancing very rapidly, making your training a vital part of this career path.
Training
As a dental technician, you will need to complete a course at a college or university to work in this position. You may attend any college with a technician program and will need to complete the course requirements for your college including some basic courses in mathematics and composition.
This is an exciting field with plenty of employment opportunities. As a dental technician, you will help hundreds of people with their appearance, self-confidence, and dental health. You can easily enter this career field right out of school as an intern and receive on the job training that allows you to learn more about your new profession.
