DRY MOUTH is often dismissed as a minor inconvenience, but it can have important consequences for oral health.
SALIVA is one of the mouth's primary protective systems.
- it helps neutralize acids produced by oral bacteria,
- washes away food debris,
- provides minerals that support enamel repair and
- helps maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms within the mouth.
So when saliva flow decreases, these protective functions become less effective increasing the RISK of:
- dental caries,
- gum disease,
- oral infections and
- halitosis (bad breath)
Common CAUSES of dry mouth include:
- dehydration,
- smoking,
- certain medications,
- diabetes,
- autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren's syndrome,
- cancer therapies and
- age-related changes in salivary gland function
Consult your doctor and dentist if you have a dry mouth or burning tongue or taste changes.
