✨ Pregnancy and Oral Health:

Oral and dental care during pregnancy require a special attention. Oral Health is part of the general health and its importance during pregnancy cannot be overemphasize as it concerns both the mother and fetus.

Negligence towards oral and dental health during pregnancy does not only cause problems such as tooth decay and toothloss, but may also cause problems such as premature birth, low birth weight infant, preeclampsia.

Therefore pregnancy is a period where the mother must take precautions inorder to protect both her health and her baby's health.

Women are more prone to gum disease and cavities during Pregnancy, probably due to hormonal changes and eating habits during pregnancy.

A) Pregnancy and periodontal disease:

Approximately 60% to 75% of pregnant women have gingivitis, which is an early stage of periodontal disease, manifested by red and swollen gums, emanating from inflammation, and aggravated by hormonal changes during pregnancy. If this gingivitis is not treated, it may cause gums infection, and loss of bone which supports the teeth, and teeth with little bone support will become loose, and maybe extracted eventually.

Research has shown that pregnant women who have periodontal infections had more than 7 times the risk of preterm delivery of low birth infant weights than women without the infection. Periodontal disease in an expectant mother can lead to miscarriage or still birth.

B) Pregnancy and Dental Cavities:

Pregnant women are also at risk of dental cavities due to changes in their behaviors such as eating habits.
High levels of cariogenic bacterias in mothers can lead to increase dental caries in infants. 1 in 4 women of bearing age, have untreated cavities, children of mothers who have high levels of untreated cavities or tooth loss, are more than 3 times more likely to have cavities as a child, and children with poor oral health status are 3 times more likely to miss school due to dental pain.

2) Prevention:

✓ All health care providers including primary care, pediatric, and maternity care providers must pay attention to oral health.
✓Oral health should be consider as part of prenatal care, where expectant mothers will be giving tips on how to protect the oral health of their infants.
✓ Every pregnant woman should be screened for oral risks, counseled on proper oral hygiene, and referred for dental treatment where necessary.
✓ Appropriate dental care and prevention during pregnancy can help reduce poor prenatal outcomes and infant caries.

✨ Gum Recession:

1) What is Gum Recession:

It's a form of gum disease, and it happens when your gum tissue pulls away from your teeth thereby exposing the roots underneath. And this makes your teeth more susceptible to cavitation/holes and sensitivity. It can either be mild, moderate or severe, and may affect one or multiple teeth.

2) Who does gum recession affect:

It can affect people of all ages but it's most common in people over 65 years. People who have periodontal disease, chew to***co, practice aggressive brushing etc, are more likely to develop gum recession.

3) Symptoms of gum recession:

✓ Tooth root exposure.
✓ Discomfort or pain near your gum line.
✓ Sensitivity during brushing and flossing.
✓ Sensitivity to heat, cold, acid and sweets.
✓ Sensitivity during dental cleanings .

Recession can lead to other more serious oral problems without treatment #

4) Causes of gum recession:
√ Periodontal disease.
√ Aggressive brushing.
√ Dental plaque or tartar buildup.
√ Trauma to your gum tissue.
√ Misalignment.
√ Smoking.
√ Tongue or lip piercing.
√ Inadequate dental care
√ Hormonal changes.
√ Grinding and clinching your teeth.

5) How to reduce sensitivity cause by gum recession:
✓ Application of fluoride varnish or desensitizing toothpaste to ease discomfort associated with gum recession.

6) Treatment of gum recession:

A) Nonsurgical treatments for mild cases of gum recession:
✓ Deep cleaning / scaling and root planning: During this procedure, tartar and plaque that has buildup on the teeth and root surfaces under the gum line is carefully removed, and the exposed root area is then smoothen to prevent bacteria from attaching there.
✓ Antibiotics: Prescribe to get rid of any remaining harmful bacteria.
✓ Dental bonding: Your dentist can at times, cover the exposed root area with composite resin to make it less noticeable and more comfortable.
✓ Orthodontic treatment in case of crooked, tipped teeth.

B) Gum Recession Surgery:

√ Gum graft surgery: Most long lasting and predictable treatment option for gum recession. During this procedure,a gum graft is used to replace the missing gum tissue usually taken from the roof of the mouth or from a sterilized human donor tissue.

7) Prevention of Gum Recession:
✓ Brush your teeth thoroughly twice every day.
✓ Floss once daily.
✓ Use antiseptic mouthwash.
✓ Regularly consult your dentist at least twice a year for professional Teeth Cleaning.
✓ Use soft bristle toothbrush.
✓ Avoid smoking.
