I adjusted the overhead light and gave my best professional smile. “Alright, let’s see what’s going on in there. Open wide, please.”
Mr. Henderson nodded, braced himself, and opened his mouth approximately the width of a soda straw.
“A little wider?” I asked.
He shook his head, his lips clamped so tight they were turning white. He grabbed a notepad from his pocket and scribbled: “If I open all the way, the tooth knows you’re coming for it. It’s an ambush.”
“I promise I’m a friend, not an enemy,” I countered. “Just a quick peek.”
He sighed, took a deep breath, and finally gave me a window of opportunity. I moved in with the mirror,order.”but before I could even blink, his jaw snapped shut like a disgruntled clam. I barely rescued my finger.
He pointed to his jaw and wrote: “The tooth has declined your request for an interview.”
“Mr. Henderson,” I sighed, “I can’t diagnose a patient who’s under a gag order.”
We spent the next twenty minutes playing a high-stakes game of “Jack-in-the-Box.” I’d wait for a yawn, he’d counter with a strategic sneeze. Eventually, I managed to spot the cavity during a particularly long blink.
As he got up to leave, he finally opened his mouth perfectly wide—to tell me a joke on his way out.
“Keep ‘em guessing, right Doc?”
I just stood there with my mirror, wondering….
