After an extraction, your body naturally forms a blood clot in the space where the tooth used to be. This clot is like a biological Band-Aid—it protects the underlying bone and nerves while the area heals.

A "dry socket" (alveolar osteitis) happens when that clot gets dislodged or dissolves too early, leaving the bone exposed to air, food, and fluids. Translation: It can be quite painful!

Top Tips for a Smooth Recovery:
Skip the Straw: The suction from a straw is the #1 culprit for pulling that clot right out. Stick to sipping from a glass for at least 48–72 hours.

No Smoking: To***co use and the "puffing" motion can seriously hinder healing and dislodge the clot.

Soft Foods Only: Stick to yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies (no straw!). Avoid crunchy or seedy foods that can get stuck in the site.

Be Gentle: Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours.

When to Call Us:
A little discomfort is normal after surgery, but if you experience severe pain that radiates toward your ear or a foul taste/smell, give us a shout immediately!
