This Thanksgiving, my heart is full!

I’m thankful for my family, who supports me, puts up with my busy schedule and reminds me of what matters most. ❤️

I’m thankful for my work family — this amazing group of people who show up every day, work hard, laugh together, support each other, and make Iris Dentistry so much more than just a dental office. 🦷💕

And I’m incredibly thankful for our patient community. For trusting us with your smiles, sharing your stories, referring your friends and families, and allowing us to be part of your lives.

You are the reason we get to do what we love every day!

There’s always something to improve, something new to learn, and another goal to chase… but today is a beautiful reminder to appreciate everything we already have. 🥰

Back in the classroom! 🦷📚🌴

This week, Dr. Iris is in Miami attending an international certification course in orthodontic TADs (Temporary Anchorage Devices)!

These tiny devices can make a big difference in orthodontic treatment, helping us achieve tooth movements that can be challenging with traditional techniques alone.

At Iris Dentistry, we believe that great patient care starts with never stopping learning. ❤️

Continuing education is one of the ways we bring new knowledge, techniques, and treatment possibilities back to our patients here in Waterloo.

And of course, there’s always time for a little Miami sunshine between classes! ☀️🌊

Dr. Iris is out of the office for a few days… 🌴☀️

And before anyone gets too jealous — yes, she’s in Miami.
No, she’s not just sitting by the pool. 😂

Apparently Dr. Iris doesn’t know how to take a trip without finding a dental course to attend. 🦷📚

She’s spending the next few days learning all about TADs and orthodontics, while the rest of us hold down the fort here at Iris Dentistry. 💪

We’ve been told she’ll come back with new ideas, new techniques… and probably 47 things she wants us to change on Monday. 😂

Enjoy Miami, Dr. Iris! 🌴

Have you ever actually looked at how your child’s top and bottom teeth fit together? 👀🦷

Your upper teeth are generally supposed to sit outside your lower teeth — almost like the lid of a box fitting around the box.

But sometimes, some of the upper back teeth bite inside the lower teeth instead.

That’s called a posterior crossbite.

And especially in a growing child, it’s something we pay attention to — particularly if they’re shifting their jaw to one side when they bite down.

Because orthodontics isn’t only about making teeth look straight. ❤️

We’re also looking at how the upper and lower jaws fit together, how the bite functions, and how that relationship develops as a child grows.

So tonight, you might find yourself looking at your child’s teeth differently. 😂

Yesterday, our team wore orange. 🧡

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we take time to honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impact on Indigenous families and communities.

As a team that lives, works and cares for people in Waterloo, we also recognize the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for this land for generations.

This day is a reminder to listen, learn, reflect and continue the work of reconciliation.

Every Child Matters. 🧡

A little Saturday celebration. 🥹✨

Amanda surprised us at the office this month with a very special delivery — our Invisalign Provider Pearl! ❤️

And I love that she caught the whole thing on video because our reactions were completely real. 😂 I genuinely had no idea what she was bringing into the room.

It may have my name on it, but milestones like this are never accomplished by one person.

There’s a whole team behind every Invisalign journey — from scanning and photos, to appointments, answering questions, tracking progress, and celebrating when we finally get to that finished smile. ❤️

So this one belongs to the team.

And apparently Amanda is now also responsible for surprise deliveries AND filming behind-the-scenes content. 😂

This is what community looks like. ❤️

Over the past little while, our patients and team have been bringing in personal-care items to support moms and children in our Waterloo community.

And seeing everything together today was pretty special. 🥹

Amanda, Alex, Becca and I sorted and packed all the donations, loaded up the car, and today we delivered everything to Monica Place. ❤️

To every patient and team member who donated, helped organize, shared the campaign, or contributed in any way — thank you.

Each donation may have felt like one small thing, but when we put them all together… look at what our community was able to do. ❤️

We’re very grateful that Iris Dentistry gets to be a small part of this wonderful Waterloo community.

Little acts of kindness become something much bigger when we do them together. ❤️

A mom once told me, “My son eats like a chipmunk.” 🐿️

And honestly… she was more right than she knew. 😂

If your child frequently finishes eating but still has food tucked inside their cheeks, it may be worth paying attention to how they’re actually managing food inside their mouth.

The tongue has a big job during eating. 👅 It helps move food onto the teeth for chewing, gather it together, and clear food from around the mouth as we prepare to swallow.

So here’s a little challenge to try at home:

After your child swallows, ask them to smile. 😁
Is there still food hiding in their cheeks?

Then ask them to use only their tongue to sweep around the inside of their cheeks and collect what’s left.

No fingers! 😂

Occasional food pocketing doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem. But if you notice it happening regularly—especially along with difficulty chewing, swallowing, or managing certain textures—it’s something worth mentioning.

These are some of the little things we look at when assessing oral function and myofunctional patterns.
