A nervous child needs comfort, not convincing.

If your child is worried about their first dental visit, try not to pressure them into “being brave.”

Instead, make the experience feel normal and predictable.

• Talk about the dentist positively and keep your words relaxed.

• Let your child know they can ask questions if something feels unfamiliar.

• Bring something familiar from home, such as a favourite small toy.

• Try to avoid telling them “it won't hurt.” Even though it is meant to reassure, it can accidentally introduce the idea of pain.

• Give the dental team the chance to build trust with your child at their own pace.

And remember, the first visit does not have to be perfect.

A child who walks away feeling comfortable with the dental environment has already taken an important step toward positive dental experiences in the future.

Building trust is the most important part of the first visit.
