Another Tooth Fact of the Day!
The first toothpaste was made in ancient Egypt around 5000 BC and was found to be made from mixtures of crushed eggshells, pumice, herbs, and ox hooves ashes that was used to clean teeth. The Greeks and Romans also made toothpaste, but their versions were more abrasive and often contained ingredients like crushed bones and oyster shells.
In the 19th century, toothpaste began to be mass-produced and sold in jars. The first toothpaste sold in a tube was called Colgate Ribbon Dental Cream, which was introduced in 1896 (check out the image below to see how it looked like!). It was the first toothpaste to contain fluoride, which is now a common ingredient in toothpaste.
Today, toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors and formulations, and many brands contain ingredients like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oils. Toothpaste is an important part of oral hygiene, as it helps to remove plaque and prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
