We call them baby teeth as though they do not count. They are holding the space.

Every baby tooth is keeping a spot open for the adult tooth waiting underneath. When one leaves too early, the teeth on either side can drift in and quietly close that space before the adult tooth is ready to arrive.

That is a large part of what a bite check around age seven is actually looking at. Not straightness. Space, and how the jaws are growing.

Most children leave with nothing but a note to check again next year. When something does need attention, seeing it while the jaw is still growing usually means a simpler path.

Age seven sounds far too early for braces. It is exactly right for a look.

By around seven, enough adult teeth have come through to show what is happening underneath. A dentist can see whether the jaws are meeting properly, whether there will be room for the teeth still to arrive, and whether a habit like thumb sucking is shaping things.

This visit is not a fitting. Most children walk out with nothing but a note to check again next year, and that is the outcome we are hoping for.

When something does need attention, seeing it early usually means a simpler path later, because a growing jaw is easier to guide than a finished one.

If your child has never had a bite check, autumn is a good time to book one.

Braces or Invisalign is the question everyone asks. Here is the one thing that actually decides it.

How many hours a day will they truly be in your mouth?

Braces work whether you remember them or not. That is their quiet advantage. Aligners only work for the hours you wear them, usually twenty to twenty two a day, and there is no way around that number.

Everything else is a trade. Braces are visible but hands off. Aligners are discreet but come with a routine that never lets up, because they go back in straight after every meal and every coffee.

Cleaning, comfort and how complicated your bite is all matter too, and that last one genuinely needs an examination rather than an opinion.

There is no best way to straighten teeth. There is only the one that suits your bite and your life.

Metal braces are the workhorse. They handle complicated movements well and they are usually the most affordable route.

Ceramic braces do much the same job with brackets that blend in more, and they ask for a little more care to stay looking clear.

Lingual braces sit behind the teeth, so they are hidden from the front. They take some getting used to and they suit certain cases better than others.

Clear aligners come out for meals and photographs. That freedom is the appeal and also the catch, because they only work for the hours they are genuinely in.
