Lately I’ve been asked about my stance on X-rays, so here’s my 2 cents. They are a very important and necessary diagnostic tool. But just because “it’s covered” does not mean you should agree to getting them done. Ask questions, “why do you want to take them”, “what problem do you see or what is the probability that you will see something”, “who will read these X-rays”, “is there a smaller xray you can take to view what you need to see” “when was the last time this image was taken” “what do you see in my mouth that warrants the X-rays”?
Lastly, “If it wasn’t covered, would you still ask me to take these X-rays”?
X-rays are radiation. X-rays are the only way to see inside. X-rays are necessary to get a complete picture so we can give you, the patient, the best treatment options and the best result. But in my opinion, “just because it’s covered” is never a reason to expose a patient to radiation. As I always tell my patients, it’s ok to ask questions!
