Some updates on in photos for those that don’t like to read long posts... and those that do, read on.

I’ve gone back and forth many times: do I or do I not build another practice? How much or little do I share online? And should I share openly or should I gatekeep?

When I first entered dentistry, I was surrounded by all the traditional approaches—the old guards pulling me in one direction while the dental industry was pulling me in the other.

After being in the dental industry for almost 19 years (OMG), here’s something I won’t gatekeep:

When you build your own lane, you’re free to be you.

And the more YOU you are, the easier everything becomes.

Your life. Your vision. It’s time.

As dentists and small business owners, we face constant pressure to appear ‘perfect’ and do everything right.

Few feel safe enough to discuss the substantial risks involved in building their own business, their way.

Because when we discuss how we want to do it, we open ourselves up to being easy targets for comments like:

‘You can’t do this’
‘I wouldn’t do it that way’
‘Why would you do that?’

All the doubts can make you second-guess yourself. And let’s not forget, there are also no guarantees of success, regardless of how meticulously you plan.

This often leads to us literally working 24/7.

You might miss your regular gym sessions, grab quick meals instead of healthy ones, accidentally overlook your child’s important events, and find yourself dyeing your own hair to save precious time.

Yet we still choose to do it because we understand that if we want a promotion in life, we need to go create it ourselves.

I believe in being transparent about business because when I was starting out, no other dentists shared their business success roadmap with me.

Success can come more quickly when you avoid repeating mistakes, learn from others’ experiences, and learn from someone actively in the process, not just theorizing about it.

There are substantial monetary and emotional investments when building something new, and there will be inevitable headaches.

But what matters is how you navigate through them—not with emotions, but with strategy.

I’m challenging both the traditional secrecy around the business of dentistry and the models that keep dentists and their teams running busy and tired in stress-filled, insurance-dependent practices just because they were told they had to, or maybe they told themselves they should.

There’s no place like Disneyland—a place where adults are reminded to embrace their inner child and where kids get to be kids.

A much-needed reminder for all of us, don’t you think?

If you want something, go after it. If you’re going to do it, go all in. And if you’re going to make a living from it, make it fun.

This mindset has been at the core of my professional journey because when you’re not having fun... You know where I’m going with this, right?

But have you ever asked yourself why you sometimes find yourself stuck doing things inside your practice that don’t bring you joy or happiness? How did this happen after investing so much time and money into becoming a dentist or doctor?

It’s because our formal training was shaped by systems and routines that didn’t consider the unique needs and ambitions of modern dentists and doctors.

In fact, those same outdated systems often force you to keep grinding—both figuratively and physically.

But let’s change the narrative together shall we?

If you’re the first in the game, you don’t need marketing. If you’re second to the game…(what do you think I’ll say here?)

I speak with a lot of dentists on a daily basis—old, young, new, seasoned, and everything in between. It’s shocking how little time many dentists spend understanding and actually doing marketing and sales.

Instead, they focus on clinical CEs and purchasing the latest and greatest technology… only to be disappointed by the ROI it brings.

While I understand the value of quality CEs and technology, here are my top 5 reasons why those alone won’t grow your practice:

1. You lose, on average, 20% of your patients each year.

2. Your team doesn’t understand what, how, or why you need another “new thing.”

3. Your patients don’t know about the “new thing.”

4. Insurance won’t cover the “new thing.”

5. You aren’t attracting patients who want the “new thing.”

Dental offices with great marketing and sales, combined with quality CE, cutting-edge technology, and strong leadership, always survive—no matter the economic climate.

If you’re the first in the game, you don’t need marketing. If you’re second to the game you have to market.
