Dear Friends,
I received an update from Dr. Friedman regarding Dr. Thuan Dao’s obituary. The private cremation ceremony has been postponed to Saturday May 2, 2026. Consequently, the dates for the condolence visits have also changed, which are now listed below:
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Associate Professor Emerita Thuan Thi Thanh Dao on April 28, 2026, at the age of 71. Thuan was a woman of remarkable dedication, warmth, kindness and intellect, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Thuan was born on September 8, 1954, in the beautiful coastal city of Nha Trang in Vietnam, to a family full of life. Thuan distinguished herself even as a youth, with a passion for learning, sharp intellect, artistic skills, a remarkable voice and enchanting beauty. Fleeing Vietnam with her young son, she arrived in Canada determined and resolute to build a new life pursuing education to the highest level. Through resilience and perseverance, she went on to build a highly distinguished career as an esteemed educator and researcher at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, where she shaped the minds and futures of countless students over the years, benefitting the care of thousands of patients.
Above all, Thuan was devoted to her large family, including her late parents. She is survived by her husband Shimon Friedman, her son Viet Ton-That, and her cherished granddaughters Skye and Claire Ton-Nu. She will be deeply missed by her siblings Giao Dao, Truc Dao, Mai Norden Dao, My Dao, and Trang Dao. She will also be missed by her stepdaughters Shirrah and Tamar Friedman, and Kinneret Fleiman, and by her step grandchildren Amit, Noam, Omer, Ellie, Eyal and Talia. Among her family, Thuan was known for her generous and thoughtful nature and gourmet cooking.
Thuan's memory will be treasured by her family, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched throughout her remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Thuan's honour may be made to Women's College Hospital.
