Our very own Dr. Matthew Preston recently came back from a week-long dental mission trip with Great Shape! Inc. to the country of Grenada 🇬🇩 located in the Caribbean islands. He was able to use his skills and expertise to provide new smiles to over 40 patients who were in need of more expensive dental treatment. For reference, the average monthly income of a Grenadian is EC$1000 (East Caribbean dollars), while the price of an extraction alone is roughly EC$1600.

“It certainly is different providing dentistry in Grenada. Because of the inequity of care, there was a great demand for our services with patients coming in with a lot of big cavities to fix. Unfortunately, these were even seen in young children. I was astonished to see some teenagers come in with blackened front teeth but felt very grateful for our modern biomaterials for being able to restore these teeth back to their natural colour and function. All this while performing dentistry with a mobile dental unit in the sweltering summer heat only being cooled by a fan – it makes you miss the Canadian winter!”

We are proud to be a sponsor for Epilepsy York Region https://epilepsyyork.org as they recently held a charity golf tournament on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario. The event was held to raise funds for the Summer Camp Program for children with epilepsy. One special fundraising event I have never seen before was a helicopter golf ball drop where tickets were assigned to golf balls which were dropped from a helicopter. The golf ball that went in the hole or closest to the hole won a special prize.

Once again we are happy to donate to the Santa Comes to Bay Street (SCTBS) with toothbrushes and toothpaste! Unfortunately because of Covid-19, SCTBS will have to drop off our items directly to the many women and family Shelters across Toronto. So no gift packaging this year. Be back in 2021!

Due to the Pandemic status of the COVID-19, it is in the best interests of public health in accordance with our provincial dental regulating guidelines that we take immediate steps to close our office and postpone all dental treatment including “true” emergency dental treatment (requiring a dental procedure) until a stable start date is established. We will be available to handle emergency consultations by phone on a limited basis. Please check our schedule if you must call us.

Any patient seeking “true” emergency dental treatment must check with our provincial regulating body, at RCDSO.ORG to access available offices in the city pre-authorized to see patients.

“The majority of patients with COVID-19 experience mild illness. It is therefore vital that Ontarians remain home when they are sick to prevent the spread of illness to others.”

We are concerned about the ease of spread of COVID-19. With the high volume of commuters in the downtown core, there is a higher possibility of cross-contamination of the Coronavirus. Thus, we must minimize exposure. The health and safety of our community, our patients and employees remain a top priority. Following Municipal, provincial and national health agencies, we will monitor the progress of COVID-19 and make changes accordingly when the situation improves.
